    Default Removing Ball Oilers.

I just noticed that a ball has disappeared in one ball oilers on my apron.

    Are these just press in?

    How do you remove these?

How are they measured? Outside diameter of the body?

Also found this one on front of the apron near the hand wheel, this one had a circlip which I have removed, I tried to gently lever it out, didn't budge.

My lathe is a Steelmaster Model: SM-920V

I think the circlip will be holding the shaft in, so you can put that back for the minute.

Thanks Stuart, they came out easy, They are 5.91 mm so guess will need 6 mm, seem to be a lot of 1/4" being sold by Aust seller.

Be interested to know where you end up getting them from, and how they fit... Quite a few of the ones on my AL335 are now defective in one way or another, really need to do the lot...

Looking at the pictures its just dawned on me that the oiler that does the dovetail for the halfnuts really should have way oil............but that would be in a perfect world

    Hi Guys,

Stuart beat me to it I was going to say that a self tapping screw and a pair of pincers would get them out. It seems that the little steel ball that should be in there, escapes quite often along with the spring. I've seen a lot of gear with oilers having the ball missing and usually full of dirt.

Recovered 1 ball and spring, the ball , spring in second pic is right at the end of the shaft, tried to get it out with a magnetized screwdriver, didn't work.
Would this be OK to leave there, as it been there for a while.

A hooked paper clip might do it.

I trick I use when soldering tiny surface mount components is to use a paper clip, straightened out, hit one end with a hammer to make a flat on it then bend it through 90 degrees, file it down so that its smooth. Clamp the round end with a crock clip and trap the SMD under the other, bent end, in the position where I want to locate it. Then solder it down. Saves burnt fingers or tombstoned parts.

As its likely a blind hole, leaving there shouldn't hurt. But then getting it out shouldn't be to hard either. If Barons idea fails I'd try another self taper.

Sorry if I sneak in a question of my own.
So where can I buy some replacement ball oilers for my AL250G?
    I guess they are 6mm.
I just need one to slip into the end of a replacement shaft I made for the idler gear.
I have checked the 'usual' places with no success.
    thanks
    Brian

I tracked the 6 mm button oiler I need from Arc Euro Trade

    084-022-00006 No.88 - Press Button Oiler - 6mm - 10 Pack £1.51
    Delivery: £12.41
VAT Element: £0.00 Grand Total: £13.92

That works out to $26.26 AUD

Thanks everyone for your valuable input.
My problem was that I only need one (or two), and while I saw those sort of prices for 10 in a search I did, I was too much of a tightass to buy them.
Leroy--Thanks that's generous of you---I really appreciate it.
The way the weather is at the moment--perfect days, I'm sure I can convince my ever-loving to take a drive up to Tambourine with me, and she can visit a gallery for a half hour while we catch up. I will be in contact Thanks a lot
