    Default Making reo hoops

    Making Hoops

A mate wants to make the metal hoops for holding the skin on African drums like djembs and djundjuns.

He normally buys a wooden shell and the hoops but they don’t always match up.

The hoops are 6mm reo, formed into a ring and welded.

    My questions:

Where to get the 6mm reo? I think Saddingtons will have it?

What is the best way to form a smooth ring? Cut to length, heat reo (with an Oxy?), hammer over an anvil or large diameter pipe?

How to weld the ring? I assume an Arc welder?

I am not a metal worker so don’t really have much of an idea. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Hi Scally,

6mm round bar bends quite easily over a form. You could make up a form fairly easily with a couple of hunks of mdf or whatever. You could make something up, with a cutout in the mdf at the reo joint, for welding. Reo could be held in pootition with a sash cramp or similar.

Welding with an arc welder is an easy process too.

As far as supplys go.... 6mm is sometimes used as styrups for footing work, so most decent builders supplies shoud have what you after in 6m lengths.

    Thanks Fossil.

It sounds like it is easy to bend so that is good news.
It could probably be bent around the jembe after it is cut to length.
One of the problems with buying hoops is matching them to the diameter of each djembe.

Now we need a welder. Would a cheap welder do the job?
