    Default Repair to old spirit level

    I have an old Rabone steel framed spirit level in need of a new horizontal bubble

    Anyone know of someone in Adelaide who repairs spirit levels?

    Looks identical to this one but a about 14inches

    G'day eskimo,
    I've heard the bubbles/ vials are held in common old glaazing putty. I imagine one would;
    1. clean out the cavity in the level,
    2. set up a perfectly level platform (say on bench),
    3. put in enough putty to fully hold the bottom and ends of vial and squish it in deep enough that the cover will go back on,
    4. push the ends of the vial down to get the bubble perfectly between lines- allow putty to set.
    This is only how i think i would do it! I have a few to do myself (somewhere in the shed...)
    Hopefully some others have done this.
    Finding plain bubble vials is a bit tricky as well, old fashioned hardware stores and sometimes even $2 tool shops.
    good luck, tell us how you go,

    I made my own levels using alu screen door framing and the bubbles from cheep ($5) plastic line levels from bunnings.

    Just cut the bubbles free from the plastic and bed them in epoxy or putty as described.
    Don't force it, use a bigger hammer.

    Timber is what you use. Wood is what you burn.
