    Default Restoring chrome parts

    Hi All,

I have been given a 1966 Suzuki A100 as seen in the photo attached. Unfortunately it is not in the same condition and needs a fair bit of restoration work. Engine still runs, according to the old guy that gave it to me. But i will strip it down and clean it up before trying to start it again.

I need advice on how to rechrome all the guards and bits that are rusted etc. The rims are also rusted and will need re doing as well. Can anyone recommend what i should do or how to go about getting these parts rechromed. Also the alloy parts of the engine are corroded and will need polishing. What is the best way to do this.

    Cheers

    Michael.

Locate a plater or metal polisher in the yellow pages and take the parts to them for assessment/quote.

    Process is.

    1. Strip plating/rust off in an acid stripping bath then neutralise and wash.

    2. Repolish to near mirror (plater will have preferences)

    3. Replate on nickel line then chrome line.

Easiest with steel, but can be done with with diecast if there is adequate material depth to begin with.

Wheels need to be despoked to polish rims, probably respoke with new spokes (SS or Chrome) as it is very diffocult to polish old spokes and keep them straight, they are normally automatically prepolished between the wire straitening line and forming machine during manufacture.

Guessing that the hubs are alloy and not originally chromed, if so a polisher should be able to bring them up nicely for you, along with any other alloy shinyware.

It definitely would pay to work either through a plater that can strip, polish and plate inhouse, or a polisher who has an excellent relationship with a plater and someone with a strip line. Acid stripping is very slow on chrome (maybe 24hrs +) but even an hour overcooking could render the underlying material useless, so don't try and spread the job through a lot of friends of friends.

    Hi Malb,

I have found a place that specialise in restoring motorcycle parts in brisbane. Thanks for the info you provided. I had no idea what the process was for rechroming. I have also located a motorcycle museum just west of brisbane that has a restored model of my bike. I will be going out there this weekend to have a look and get some tips from the owner.

    Cheers

    Michael
