A Very Early Vernier Calliper
One of my favourite contributors on Practical Machinist is "rivett608", and he has just posted about a real gem he discovered while on a trip in Europe. This is quite a long series of postings, but as it progresses, more and more is revealed of the history of the piece. My wife is a genealogist, and this story reminds me somewhat of the history which sometimes comes to light in some of her researching. A fair bit to wade through, but very interesting and informative too.
Very Rare 1816 Vernier Caliper is now in my collection!

Thank you Rob.
A fascinating read. What appealed to me in particular was Rivett's signing and dating of the replacement knob. An honest repair.

Hi Bob, I thought that you would enjoy that story, and if you haven't seen his other postings, (although I have a feeling that you have seen some of them at least) they are really well worth seeking out. He is involved with some technical museums, and sometimes announces new exhibitions, and gives an illustrated summary of the content. He is also an extraordinarily talented machinist modeler, as well it would seem, collector of interesting engineering equipment.

Convex Knurling
Bob
The old verniers are interesting.
The convex knurl on the thumbscrew, is something I have always admired.
I think I can recall you previously showing some knurls of this type ?
Any idea where one might start looking for this design of knurl ?
I guess with a little effort they could be home machined.
regards
Bruce

Locally Knurled
A bit closer to home. Have a look here at Peter "Lightwood" McBride's handiwork. I have seen Peter's exquiste work up close.

I'm guessing the diameter of the knurling wheel must be calculated before hobbing? I really like that effect, another thing to add to the list......
