Do you have some pictures, googling comes up with a few different hits for RF 40(maybe just different models over the years)

A new motor will likely cost more than a VSD. First thing to check is if your motor has the star point bought out. On the terminal block where the wires go into the motor is there 6 terminals or only 3?

Sorry mate she in bits i'll post photo's when back together if you Google worldwide Jet GHD20PFT you can see it , she's a drll and tap machine with the flat table. The Jet has more bling on it and a 2spd motor giving it 12 ratio's'
The motor has 3 terminals and 3 black wires from the motor, it's 1-5hp 1400 rpm. I can get a 1hp1ph chinese motor that will bolt on for $200 and i need a new switch so a vfd is viable
Had a win today i pulled the downfeed box apart there's slight damage to the worm gear for the fine feed, a few burrs around the selector shaft, buy 1x6202 brg and it will be good
enough for the little work i'll give it.

I would definitely pull or (have a sparky pull) the wiring point out for 240v 3phase. Your VFD would give you a much wider speed range than the 2-speed current model anyway...say from 20 Hz (or lower) up to 100 or so if you need that high. A sensorless vector VFD will give you better low rpm torque than a basic v/Hz model.

Just searched the net on those Vector VFD's would i be right to say the cost would be around $400 delivered + the motor winder the cost will get out of hand, I've just been on the Rong FU website there's 2 drills like mine with 1hp 1ph and 1-5hp 3ph so i'm thinking go the ebay 1hp1ph motor and hope for the best, i want to buy a bit of milling gear for it so i'm watching the cost other wise i should have bought a M/D for 2k

Well, I have always bought my VFD's used (and cheap) on ebay. A small drive like that shouldn't be much. I recommended a vector drive because it follows that slow speed will be used for turning larger bits, and you'll want some torque for that. If you just use the gearbox for that then no worries...a standard drive should do.

There are instructions online for doing the windings yourself. Your personal comfort level may not go that far however.

Your right about the comfort level [a 3 din plug is my limit] I've got a sparky down the road, he's time poor and doesn't know vfd's so i thought i would do the chasing around, get what's needed and say here fit these. Back to the 1hp 1ph motor my spindle speeds are 60 to 1500 rpm over 6 gears i could always go down 1 gear to pickup torque, my biggest drill is about 1-1/4 inch which i don't think i've used.
Do you think the reversing switch would still work on 240v it's a barrel type with a black box behind it, a contactor i think their called

Hi Whitey...Um, I'm going to plead ignorance on single phase motors. I do know that some of them can be reversed but I don't think that's always the case.

Hi Whitey,

Sorry, the reversing switch won't work for single phase, at least as it's wired, it could be re-wired to work as a reversing switch for a single phase motor, but that would require a bit of work by an electrician, I gather that's not your area of expertise.

I'd recommend you pull the motor out, take it to a motor re-winder and ask them to bring out the star point so you can run it in delta. While it's there ask them to give it a once over, check insulation etc.. It's generally a 10 minute job for a good motor rewinder.
