    Default Rivet Gun Nose ???

I have a long arm rivet gun same as this Long Arm Riveter | Rivets & Riveters | Northhern Garage Supplies which my son picked up trouble is no nose fittings at all.

I was considering making the required 4, 5 and 6mm noses for it.

Can anyone advise as to how to determine the length required for the internal section to activate the jaws.

    Default Make 2?

G'day Ray, This is a bit tricky & I have never tried this, but I reckon this would work.
If we would be confident that the jaws have the same Dims as most garden variety guns, then copy the length (or stem dia:nose length ratio) from those.
If not confident, then make just one nose, guess the max length + some for luck, but with the largest stem hole. With the gun in 'rivet receive' mode, slide the largest stem into the gun.
If it fits, keep reducing the length of the nose until it won't fit - the previous nose length will be the right for the largest stem dia.
The current nose length should OK for the 2nd largest stem.
The ratio of stem dia / nose length for the largest and 2nd largest should (might??) now be the same.
That ratio can then be used to make the other noses.

I hope that makes sense. If you don't have some old noses to measure from, I could measure some that I have if you want & post them back here.

    Regards, Daryl

    Plan A
All the inside of the nose is doing is spreading the jaws ever so slightly so that a rivet can be slid in. On that basis I would suggest getting a rivet shaft and putting it in the jaws, measuring the depth and then adding a small amount (.2/ .3mm?)

    Plan B
If you threaded up a short bit of bar with the right thread, put a cone on the end and a hole up the middle, you should be able to wind it in until the rivet shank can be put in (or releases if it is in there). If you also made a nut, once you had the depth right you could run the nut down and with a little bit of loctite set the nut in place so that when you removed the threaded part the nut would stay and you could measure what you needed. You would have to do this with each size rivet you wanted a nose for as the shafts are all different diameters.

    Default Good One Michael

Yep, I think both of Michael's methods are better than mine.

Thanks to both of you Daryl and Michael for the ideas of measuring the depth required for the crown of the dome.

I have 3 or 4 varieties of hand riveters which I can check dome radi off of course not one of these has the right thread let alone depth.

Its a save a tool project before its gutted for other things I am sure now I can make something up.
