Rivett 715
You guys are gunna hate me.....
Its funny, just last week Ken started a thread on Rivett lathes. And now this....
I get an email from my Dad yesterday, he is a member of the local Freecycle group. It just says "thought you might be interested in item 12, email the guy if you are interested"
The listing says "old metal lathe. Not working. Needs Pulleys motor etc compound is rusted"
"What it is: Rivett 715 made 1942"
I sent the guy an email saying i was interested in old machines and restoring them. I spoke to him earlier and he said i was the only person who didn't just say "oh yeah i could use a metal lathe"
Ok she is rusty, and missing the motor and countershaft and original stand.
I'm picking her up this arvo, pics then.
Cheers,

All turned out well in the end hey Ew. Fingers and toes are all now uncrossed.
Any clarity on the spindle?

I was just looking at the photos Mike Garwood posted of a 608 and its accessories and thinking 608s are probably common compared to the 715. A long adventure ahead of you Ew.
Schaublin accessories appear to be made of unobtainium, I reckon Rivett might have used something rarer for the 715.

Unfortunately you will be waiting a long time.
Good news, it was free......the tailstock is original and in bearable condition. The angled edges of the bed still Shie some scrape marks. Bearings are there and feel ok, did I mention it was free?
The bad, spindle has been doctored and the miniature L00 nose removed, along with the 4c taper, and a threaded one put in place. The collet closer and handwheel is mia, as is the outer spindle sleave. The pulleys are badly damaged, looks like someone took it apart with a hammer. The entire cross slide is off a 608.
Not one to go running from a challenge I'll contact the rivett guys in the states and see if I can get some dimensions.....
Pics tonight.
Cheers,

Main bearings, AC there are 2 pre loaded against each other at the front end, one at the rear. Never seen the makings "Support here" on a bearing before.

5" 4 jaw, branded New Britain MFG CO, seems to be just fine under the rust. It is very thin, maybe 1 1/4".

Some shots of the bed and tailstock on the LeBlond, gives some perspective.....

Approx. 1800 608's were made, approx. 180 715's. Very rare indeed. Weapons grade unobtainable indeed.
For anyone interested a link to the manual http://www.deprecision.com/RivettLat...Riv715_man.pdf

I was thinking 102 size last night but it looks more 70-ish. A least you have the spindle and nearly as important, the manual.

Oddly enough it is 7" swing x 15" centers (715 , guess what the capacity of the 918 was...). Overall bed length is 33", 3" wide i think. You have to remember that the LeBlond saddle is over 2' wide and 2' deep, and would weigh more than the entire 715 by itself. Bed alone would weigh 50kg i reakon, heavy enough to make you grunt but still easily movable. Its a real shame the spindle is butchered, making a new compound with drawings is easy enough (well do able anyway) but making a spindle is another thing.....
