My 8" Vertex has 3 slots, the 6" Vertex I've seen also has 3 slots. As far as I'm aware the Shoba is an Indian knock-off of the Vertex.

3rd March 2010, 10:25 PM #17I think you'll find the 6" Vertex has 4 t slots, so the same as the Shoba in that respect.www.lockwoodcanvas.com.au
I will never be the person who has everything, not when someone keeps inventing so much cool new stuff to buy.
From an early age my father taught me to wear welding gloves . "Its not to protect your hands son, its to put out the fire when u set yourself alight".

Thanks again for more information, from information I have been able to gather the Shoba is manufactured in India and is thought to be as good or even slightly better than the Vertex.
It does have four slots.
Apparently Vertex changed the bearings or removed them, not sure and would like any further comments about this.
For me it would be far more convenient to be able to purchase it locally but the Shoba that comes complete with dividing plates, etc at $396 is a much better buy.

Found this site through a pen turning forum I frequent.
They have an interesting array of articles on all sorts of metal working equipment and tools, including one on Rotary Tables

xr6t,
Don't be too confident about the Shoba quality.
I have had a couple of items that were simply not capable, as received, of achieving the stated capabilities because of poor quality - both manufacture and assembly.
It is the same old story, an efficient manufacturing plant with marginal profit not putting the time or money into quality control.
It is vitally important that you critically examine the item on receipt.
My experience is that the item 'appears' OK but has subtle issues that can affect the quality of the work you can produce.
With care and patience the issues can be overcome.
I have both Vertex and Shoba, and would acquire either in the future, if required.
Good luck and happy machining,
John.

Thanks all for the views -
I'm taking the message that I should inspect carefully - meaning it is a bit hard to buy remotely so I'll pass on the minitech offer for now.
Thanks
David
