Rotary table Vs Dividing head
G'Day Folks,
I am thinking about buying a rotary table for the milling machine, but also considering a diving head. The table seems to be a bit more versatile and as I can't really afford both ..... Does anyone have any thoughts on the subject?

Hi,
Get the rotary table......it will be a much more versatile piece of equipment....some rotary tables have optional dividing plates which can be used with them, making them into dividing heads, and giving you the best of both worlds.
Hope this helps,
Karl

G'Day Karl,
I was not aware of dividing plates being usable with any rotary tables but I will look for one that has that facility and go for that. Thanks for the advice. Cheers, Steve.

Hi David,
I have a picture of one in front of me but no scanner.....can give you part numbers if that helps.....it's listed in the manual for the 10" rotary table I purchased several months ago, along with other optional pieces such as tail stocks. The rotary table I purchased is certainly nothing special, being a Taiwanese VERTEX branded unit, but it's not been a bad piece of gear. The part number that would suit the unit I have is DP-3, and from the picture, it mounts where the hand wheel on the rotary table is usually fixed, and uses a replacement "handwheel" with a locking detent to engage with the holes in the dividing plate.
Hope this helps,
Karl

Hare and Forbes have the dividing plates and tailstock for Vertex rotary tables. They are not expensive.

Hi Karl,
Thanks for the info. Just goes to show it doesn't matter how long you've been in a trade there are always new things to learn.
Cheers
