Thoughts on running a Bridgeport head lying on it's back?
I'll be starting a major rebuild and modification of a tractor front-end loader in the next couple of weeks, the project will involve some line-boring of cylinder and linkage pivot points across the loader frame. I've looked at a lot of home-brew line boring setups online but the best idea I've come up with is to use the J-head off my frankenmill to provide both drive and feed to the boring shaft. The idea is to mount the loader arms on my steel welding bench and to mount the mill head lying on it's back at one end of the bench, driving the boring shaft shaft through a universal-jointed driveshaf tand using the power feed of the J-head. I have the perfect mounting piece for the head in the form of half the knuckle from the BP overarm

which can be bolted down to the table.
The big reservation I have is the lubrication of the power-feed system in the J-head with it lying on it's back. I'm interested in thoughts on this from those more experienced than me with these mill heads. Having rebuilt the thing I don't want to destroy it, but if it can be safely run in this way it would provide a very neat solution for this task.
