what's going on.
I just spent some time typing up a new thread and when I went to post it the system claimed I wasn't logged in and my lengthy post just disappeared into a blank screen???

No idea why your post disappeared.
But heres something I do. Type your thread in word (or notepad.) That give you spell check and puntuation.
Then copy and paste it in. That way you wont lose it. I've even heard of typing it in as an email and sending it to yourself.
I assume this is something to do with your recent purchase from Rich River? That can be a bag of worms.
Adding pictures to a thread that dosn't exist yet. Doesn't work. Make a post to establish a thread, then edit it to add pictures, or make the second, and add them in there.
Regards Phil.

Thanks Phil; but you are smarter than I. In other words I have got no damn idea whatsoever with all this copy & pasting etc.
You are right; the post was about the Hardinge HLV-H. You would most likely be one of very few to have had anything to do with such a rare beast. I was going to make a thread about the machine with photos to share the joy (no gloat whatsoever). I cannot believe my good luck on tripping over it. Managed to piggybag that one pic on the other post; but from thereon things turned to crap. For a while I could not upload pics nor add text to already established threads. Then this one snuck through.
If you are interested; this machine came out of CSIRO Geelong. Had been disconnected and stored in a corner for many years. It was heavily covered in dust and grime. The scrappy must have put a bid in for a heap of scrap when the building closed down and the lathe and an Eckold power hammer were among it. He knew what he had, but had underestimated its worth.
On my way home I stopped and spoke with the neighbour who is a maintenance fitter & turner and was shift supervisor at the old Ky cannery until SPC sacked them all a few weeks ago. He was amazed at the condition of the bed which at this stage appears to have no visible wear. Small amount of backlash in the rack and leadscrew/nuts.
I suppose it is still too early in the day to crack a beer and lovingly dust it off.

Never too early to celebrate acquiring a HLV-H.... let's see those pictures...
Ray
PS... I partially take the blame for this one, I was in Echuca for a Birthday dinner at the Shamrock, and dragged the wife into Rich River Dealers scrap yard ( as you do..) and checked out their latest purchases, a big rotary table... for more detail on that see the ebay & auction forum.. I had a quick look at a TOS surface grinder, but nothing especially caught my eye.... there was a big diamond lapping machine over in the non-ferrous area....
A week or so later, when some of those items came up on Grays, Ken rang to ask about the TOS grinder, I suggested he should go and look for himself as I couldn't remember any of the details... Dammed if he doesn't come back with a Hardinge HLV-H for next to no money..... to say I was miffed at missing out, would be putting it mildly, but at the same time, i'm glad to see Ken get it, couldn't have gone to a nicer home ( except mine )...

Have you ticked "Keep me logged in" or "Stay logged in" at the top of the page where it says "Welcome" and "notifications", etc?

The problem will be something to do with the way your browser is handling the cookies.. ( well that's my guess ) That is it's not remembering that you are logged in.
If it's worked before with whatever browser you are using, try clearing out the cookies and start again.

Also I should have mentioned in my previous post, it is almost impossible to add photos if using Internet Explorer but Mozilla Firefox is OK. DAMHIK

I use 8 and its fine, before anyone gets excited I always use Chrome, but it has some "features" I can do without sometimes.

Here goes,
W7 and firefox.
Everything AOK until 2 days ago until a W7 update; then last night a Firefox update. The poop really hit the fan then. This afternoon I hit the sleep button as usual as I went back to caress my baby; well work in the workshop and the screen went blank and no signal; but the computer continued to run with hard drive running permanently. Managed to force it to turn off.

Well Done!
Hi Ken,
Welcome to the world of the 5c Collet and Hardinge taper nose tooling! Was there any tooling with the machine?
I saw the photo in the other thread. I am thinking that this might be the HLV model prior to the HLV-H. My thinking is based on the speed control/indication system which is different in the two models.
Either model is pretty rare in this country and if the bed has little wear, quite desireable. Worn beds can of course be reground although I have read the process is a little tricky.
Congratulations and we await further posts with much interest!
Cheers

Beryl B,
Just managed to start a thread on the lathe. I have also tried to reply to it with pics; but the forum itself is either extremely slow or refuses to respond. As soon as I try to upload; the upload is trashed and disappears. effing frustrating.
from what I can glean is that the manual variable drive on English made models was used very sparingly and rare.
