Fellas, after an email exchange overnight I was directed to Greenwood Tools in the UK. They'll ship for around £60 because they are equipped to delete the VAT. I see their extra inserts are £31 incl VAT.

(I found these guys some time ago, but then lost them. Google lost them too I think)

Before people go too far down the road of extra inserts: I have used my Sandvik scraper with its original blade for probably 30 hours of scraping; there is zero detectable wear. How about you RC? Any wear yet?

As an alternative, I bought some carbide blanks from Enco in the US. They are quite cheap and available in various sizes. They can be brazed or silver soldered to a handle or spend the extra 10 mins and machine up a holder. The latter has the advantage that a heap of blanks can be sharpened and simply swapped as they become blunt, to be re-honed again as one batch at the end of the day.

Pete...could you be so kind as to link the page for them? My brain lacks the cells needed to work the Enco website without going all volcanic. I bought a few of those inserts from Forrest but I'll be damned if I can find anything like them on Enco.

Pete's home made alternative certainly is attractive. I don't imagine it would be too difficult to make a suitable handle.

I just sent off an email to Greenwoods seeking confirmation of price and payment options for the Sandvik scraper.

When I searched the net for a Sandvik Indexable Scraper part no. 620 - 25 H10, I found this.

Bit of a concern if the person that you are speaking to on the phone doesn't know one scraper from another.

I'll do my best Greg but am currently trying to get by with my iPhone and I'm swearing enough at it as it is. If I get some wifi access at some stage I'll hopefully get a chance to drag out the MacBook and find it.

Greg, try page 183 of enco catalogue. I can't recall what size I bought and would need to wait until I got home to confirm, but I'm guessing about 1 x 1/2 x 1/8 or so???

Bob I haven't had a need to do any scraping lately so haven't made the handle for the blanks (I also have a HSS scraper). What I had in mind however was a little shelf machined into the handle as per the commercial designs, however one improvement would be machining the "lip" as a v, a bit like a snake tongue if that makes sense? An alternative may simply be a couple of very short pins pressed through the handle. Either way I thought it would enable a curved blank end to be secured so they could be sharpened double ended with different radius if required. The enco blanks come in packs of 10, so with all this I don't expect to run out of sharp inserts any time soon! Maybe too much, but I was so sick of rehoning my HSS scraper, this time there won't be any excuses not to be using a sharp tool!

What is it with local suppliers and their internet shopping theories? Wrong photo, no price. Why would you bother? (Apart from it being local)

Yea you will never ever wear one of those carbide blades out...

Just remember the inserts have 4 sides and you could have them sharpened to 4 different radii..

Default I should start a new thread...

I hope to have prices/shipping confirmation by the end of the week on a granite surface plate 36" X 24" X 4". I have a price of $155 ea, might be a bit better at the end of the day. I have asked a shipper to kindly quote on prices for 1, 2 and 3 qtys.

I'll post those prices here later in the week.

I'm hoping to get 'em here for less than $400 ea total.

(The supplier is one I've used before for my DRO's and some other stuff. The plates look like the same Chinese plates everyone sells, only they go from China to Detroit, to Indianapolis, to here for 1/2 of the price from China to here. ?)

Thanks Pete...I'll have a Valium then take another look. I do have at least one brazed-on scraper here- I think it's shown in the scraping thread.

If you could get an insert 1" X 1" X 1/8" you could duplicate the Sandvik holder arrangement exactly. (Which BTW has a very slight taper so that the insert is positively gripped between the tang and the anvil.

Actually now looking through the list I think I settled for the 1/8 x 1/2 x 1 #416 in the catalogue? I decided I could use this one sideways and 1/2" would still be long enough to grip or braze. They were much cheaper too!

However I seem to recall that carbide can be scored and snapped if you wanted to reduce a longer piece.

Could something like this wood turning chisel insert be used for scraping or is the geometry wrong, too sharp an angle?

    Hi Bob,
Pipe clay had some carbide blanks and I bought 5 off him for I think $10 each last year. If you contact him he might still have some. Greg also offered and sent me a freebie one because he picked up a few for cheap.
As for that insert working I can't see why not as long as it's wide enough and the right grade. I can't see a size in the listing.

    Dave
