I think I bought the 619-1245 @US$3.95 ea. Basically the same as you quoted Greg, just 1/2" instead of 1/4". I figured the 1/2" may give more secure clamping, however the smaller would probably be fine if brazed on. Either way, I think 50 bucks for a brand name insert is rather keen.

Right you are Pete...I was planning to braze them if I ever needed another. But I should make up some Sandvik-like holders for my Biax and use the item you cited instead. The Biax doesn't take long to blunt a blade...maybe 15 minutes max use between lappings.

I was just trying to make an Enco order worthwhile. Check out their prices on the Engineer's Black book and the Fasteners book. Less than 1/3 the local price, and they're printed here!

Ha ha, I had a chuckle over that observation. How do you spell gouging?

Enco is where I bought my Drill Doctor from, at the time on special for peanuts. Go on Greg buy one and then you too can join the "hmmm, is it ok or a POS" club.

    Gregory,

I just paid Greenwoods 55 pound (approx. $85 AU ) for the Sandvik but it you are keen to buy some Enco carbide and have room left in your order for a few extra bits, I'd be more than happy to forward you some dough to cover their cost and a slice of the postage. I have no idea of Enco's shipping costs but I can't imagine they'd slip half a dozen slivers of carbide in an envelope and post them off USPS First Class International.

I'll post those prices here later in the week.

I'm hoping to get 'em here for less than $400 ea total.

(The supplier is one I've used before for my DRO's and some other stuff. The plates look like the same Chinese plates everyone sells, only they go from China to Detroit, to Indianapolis, to here for 1/2 of the price from China to here. ?)
OK...for those of you who are interested in cheap tombstones:

I am going to buy three 24" X 36" X 4" plates for around $160* ea. in Indianapolis.

I have to pay by wire transfer though, which adds a fee of (I think) $50ish. They are going to come via a car importer who sends a container every two weeks. We were quoted $100-$150 each shipping, plus GST on the total, plus a $90 customs fee for the entire shipment. The only X factor is the cost of the local shipping in the States, which I hope to get quoted tonight. So worse case is $160 + $150 +$30 + wire transfer$20 =$360 + US shipping.

The vendor is Wholesale Tools, they have a 10% off sale until Sunday

I can recommend them having purchased from them before.

The forwarder details I can provide in a couple of days.

Bob, I was trying to find a reason to buy some, but I don't need them right now. I know its not like me to apply rational restraint to a buying opportunity, but I'm keeping my powder dry for another go at a rotary table.

You might want to look into what Shars will charge to send the equivalent to the address you would be picking them up from and see if it totals to a better price. Theirs range in price from $200 to $380 depending on which grade you are looking for.

    shars.com - Pink Black Granite

They are in Illinois, which if I still remember correctly is only a state or two away from Indianapolis.

    Thanks Pete...

I didn't look at Shars. Their A grade is $203 in that size. They also have an "AA" grade, (allegedly accurate to 42 millionths) for $380. Their plates all have double ledges though-a feature that I have a (probably irrational) bias against.

The W-T unit at $160 has a stated grade B which is 0.0002" which I think is fine for my infrequent use. If I could be absolutely confident in the stated grading I'd like an AA, but I am unwilling to pay more for the same plate with a better cert.

Greg (Who has seen an envelope full of certificates beside a stack of plates at a local seller. All the certificates were exactly the same. I don't think I was supposed to look that closely)

Yep, I have a number of tools I've bought from the US and just run them off a small step-down transformer from jaycar. Any of the tools alone would have paid for the transformer many times over, never mind all of them added up!

Bob, check with enco regarding the postage, I've found them excellent with postage. Of course you may look through their current monthly special flier on their home page and find a few other goodies!

Thinking over Pete's (QCInspector) idea I will get a quote from Shars because their $203 plate is supposed to be grade A (0.0001"). That represents a better value I reckon if the grade is correct. Ideas?

Also remember the B grade will be 4" thivk while the A and AA will be 50% heavier as they are 6" thick..

Actually, I was reading a couple of sites just now. According to Standridge a 24" X 36" A grade is still shown as 4", with an accuracy of 0.0001". I reckon that'll be fine for me if I can souce one without ledges, cheap with cheap shipping.

As RC rightly points out the 6" plates are serious mass.
