I have seen some come in to my work to be repaired, not exactly sawtooth, more like a dog clutch. they came off the drive shaft of a mobile feed mixer I think.

I'll ask about them tomorrow and see if I can get more information.

do you have accses to a lathe and mill can make your own,or if the quantity is there get a jobbing shop to make them up for you.

not a saw tooth clutch but gocarts have a nice centrifical clutch with a sprocket for chain drive takes about 5-6 hp and work well . cheers bob

Actually some of the kart ones go up to 28hp. The cost would be a mitigating factor and if it broke in service then it would be hard to obtain parts etc. I would see what the locals use as a clutch on pumps etc and use that as they can be serviced locally. Yamaha make a motor that is commonly used in SE Asia for pumps etc and they might have some info.

Thanks to all for the advice. The drive for this clutch will only be turning at 10-20 rpm so a centrifugal unit cannot be used. Also it will only transmit a max of 1-2HP. It will be driving a seed and fertiliser metering mechanism on a small seed drill. A dog clutch would work as well.
However dog clutches transmit power in both directions, whilst sawtooth clutches only operate one way. This is a safety mechanism for seed drills, so that if the operator drives the machine backwards while the clutch is engaged, it justs slips on the ratchet and does not turn all the drives in the wrong direction.

do you have the use of any machinery,something turning so slow and with that amount of HP shouldnt be to hard to make,even something along the lines of an cranck handle type of engagement,should provide the type of saftey feature your looking for.

what about using some milling machine cutters for the dogs

Modified dog clutch? Just cut either the teeth and/or socket with an angle on the 'no-go' side and use a light coil spring to force engagement. It could be made with a drill press, hacksaw & a file or cold chisel - really village mechanic stuff.

Not so many teeth as the 'quality' design (2 or 4?) , but the teeth/socket can be made pretty robust.

What about using a sprag clutch. I used to have one on my old tractor PTO.
They are still readilly available for about $150.00.

Another idea.... what about using a large one way way bearing. I have one in the shed that I was going to use to make a dyno for another hobby of mine. Too many hobbies, not enough time. It has about a 5/8" bore and is 3" x 1/2" dia and about 4" long. Weighs about 2 1/2 lbs and is rated to 10hp. Just a thought.

The sprag clutches should be available from any farm machinery outlet, or you can get them off e-bay in the states a bit cheaper sometimes.

Here is a couple of links to the pto clutches in the states. I bought one a couple of years back. Delivery should be about $30.00USD so bear that in mind if you get one sent here.
