Scope of LPG gas welding
Hi there
Sorry if this has been asked before; I used the search facility but couldn't work it. I have a BOC 130 amp stick welder and this is fine but I prefer to weld with gas. In order to weld lighter metal (not bullbars) does the LPG torch do it or would I need oxy acetylene?

To weld (not braze) you need oxy acetylene. It will be difficult if you're planning on welding car body parts as they don't oxy weld easily .. you would be better off with a TIG welder.

Thanks Mav
I want to look at making my own sidesteps and thought I might be able to get away with an LPG kit.
I can buy a TIG kit for the stick welder so maybe it would be better going down that way.

As said above LPG will not get hot enough, many side steps are made from alumiium, if you are going that way you will need ac/dc TIG

Thanks, China. I have the BOC 130 I might just save up and get the TIG kit for it and do it that way. Been looking at Youtube videos of TIG welding. I think the side steps are the challenge, if I decide to build my own winch/bull bar I'll go with the stick welding feature but the side step material is a bit lighter which might suit the TIG. I have a dream of making some aluminium steps to get me up to the roof rack as well. Ah well, the dreams of mice and men and all that!!!

I've had the same CIG oxy/LPG torch for 30 years. It's OK for brazing RHS and tube, but just doesn't have enough oomph for anything thicker. The flame also has a tendancy to blow out when welding at internal corners. I guess the tip gets hot.
I use a cutting tip to braze thicker stuff. If you can afford the astronomical rental on the acetylene cylinder I'd go for that. It's much more versitile than LPG.
Cheers
