The Scrap Man
Just got back from the local scrappy.
I found this nice big mill vice.
The stand it's on was unusually heavy, and I couldn't work out why they would have the lower shelf on such an angle. Can anyone guess????

Looks like they needed some counter weight for some thing heavy on top of the stand. so the grabbed the closet heavy items that looked like fitting.
Get a free surface plates with every stand purchased.
Now for the sad news...I asked the bloke if he gets much machinery through. Occasionally. He's got some skips at a factory now that the new owner is trashing big lathes & stuff...I tried but couldn't get any details out of him as to where. He said he didn't know, which wasn't true because he delivered the skips.…..Live a Quiet Life & Work with your Hands

The handle is missing but the stub moves freely, the jaw is not moving currently. I tilted the vice and sprayed some WD40 under the jaw, will see if that helps. The rust is just surface rust. The base plate for the drill? Was there also. At a guess 1m x 600mm it must have been a big drill once.

Nice find, hope he didn't rip you off for the "scrap". I would take a guess that it was on the angle, so that a box of "stuff" was put on the bottom shelf for some TA to drill, if it was on the flat the stuff would still be at the back and make it hard for TA to reach. I'm guessing because that is how I use to do it, set up for TA's.

Not sure what I paid for the stand as it was a lot price for what I grabbed. The vice was $1\kg, I negotiated that to 80c. Different scrap yard.
After the WD40 the jaw moves ok. I put some oil in it until I have time to clean it up.
matt no magic cave of treasure, just vist the local yards when I pass and hope to find something, most times nothing. Spent the last few hrs driving around the local industrial estates hoping to spot that skip of machinery to no avail. Maybe they will load it carefully and unloading it at the scrappy the same way and not break anything.....not likely. I'll drop past next week and see if it has turned up.…..Live a Quiet Life & Work with your Hands

Train spotting
Holy cow , that's a lump of metal You would need a bowl of weeties after lifting that .
A friend of mine is into hobby machining. He is a suburban train driver and it is amazing what one can spot from a train drivers window. One day while driving his silver bullet , he spotted a Bridgeport milling machine sitting up the back yard of a small business , neglected . Anyway a few days later he managed to find the place and he asked then if they would sell it . Yep , he got it for a steal.

Are you saying I need to get a job driving trains??? Or maybe just ride them staring out the windows with a notebook & gps
I'm not sure if I should leave the plate there as it is heavy & does it's job, or rescue it and return it to it' original purpose with a bit of scraping. Other than hideous green paint a quick look it seems in pretty good nick.…..Live a Quiet Life & Work with your Hands

Jammy
Been taking a leaf out of my book eh. Nice find.
Not surprised by the scrapman's words, they don't like to let on where they get good stuff from in case someone gets in there first.
The secret is to call by on a regular basis. After a while you will find that they will put stuff on one side that you might be looking for.
This morning I got a nice Hotpoint washing machine motor. Universal AC/DC and the controller card, for £5.00p.
Good hunting.Best Regards:
BaronJ.
