Hi Phil,
I think my current theory is along the same lines as yours. Yes honing can give a better edge, but I think that edge is so easily damaged that its not worth the trouble, except maybe towards the end when passes are very light. In the early passes I'm thinking it might be about as much use as lapping a cold chisel.
I to have seen the aluminium floating down to the floor from the lap.... makes me want to try more hand turning.
I modified my grinder lap today, hope to get some pictures soon but I'm not sure it is something that will show up well in pictures... more of a feel thing. And its not my pool of knowledge is deep enough to judge much. I'll see I guess.
Stuart
p.s. I also remember when a diamond wheel were something very special. Kept in its special box in the the special cupboard. Now we use them on 100mm angle grinders lol

Not sure what Sandvik use on their scraper inserts when you buy them new, but I have never got them as smooth as that again...
Compare one against one sharpened with your own tools and you will see the one you sharpen leaves scratches, while the Sandvik one leaves smooth scrape marks...Light red, the colour of choice for the discerning man.

Absolutely true that! Its immaculately keen, just a pity its so broad. That edge and radius I'm guessing happens on some thing upwards of $300k. A full blown ANCA grinder will set you back that. Or they have the machine still that was written off the books 20 years ago that can still turn out that tip. I'd agree with you they are sharp. It always pains's me to re-shape them on a dirty old green wheel.
Regards Phil.
