Most importantly, you need to bring your sense of humour....

What, we don't get one included in the price? How about ebay? Grays? You have to eb able to get one somewhere, surely?

The only thing not included is a hand scraper, and the cost of Saturday nights dinner. We go to a local Chinese dumpling place. Having cash to settle that would be handy, $20 - $25 would cover that.

The reason for the hand scrapers is, you wont know what suits you best, until you have tried a few. Lengths, widths, handles, styles. I'll have about over 40 to try from silver soldered carbide to a shank, cheap through to brand new Sandvik's. All of those will be on offer, once you have settled on a system.

I've done the same with carbide. Finding enough for 27 blokes has been a challenge. So I made some. Diamond ground in house, and wire EDM'ed to shape. Sharpened as far away as Rockhampton, and ready to go.

Work holding, I just about have covered, but if one or two of the local blokes could bring in a vice or two, that would be handy. It was Ray & Josh G that brought a swivel base vice to 2011. That was kind of cool as you can swivel them to get a cross hatch.

If we are putting a few vices around, we need Gee-Clamps to hold them. Pretty stock standard bench's here. Any thing in the 4 - 10 inch range would work.

With what we have prepared plus the vices on my benches, we are probably covered. But if you are driving in, and can throw them in the boot. If we use them we use them.

A spare Shop Vac would be handy. I have one here, but another would be a useful addition. Keeping the work clean so you get a good print reading, is the most frustrating part of the weekend.

Fold up or stackable chairs, so we can sit for lunch. I went and priced hiring those. The Scottish blood on my mothers side prevented that. We are looking to cover about 16 's. I have a few at home. And I'm waiting on one of the neighbours here at work to see what he has. If any one had a few chairs they could drag in.

6mm allen keys, I bought a dozen today when R.C mentioned it. 4mm allen keys I'm still working on. A 4 mm key is used to get your carbide out of the clamp. The best kind are a tee handle with a short leg, which you keep in your pocket.

With 12 days to go, we need to get a few more things written down. I've been in all weekend getting ready. I'll try to get back online after I go home for dinner.

    Regards Phil.

I hope the dinner is actually rather a 'dumpling place' ...

I can probably round up two milling vices and G-clamps for them, along with a pair of camp chairs. I'll also bring my own lunch as I'm coeliac.

What is the price range on the scrapers? I assume the $20-25 is for the dinner.

Any one else have any special dietary requirements I should know about. Allergies, Cultural or Religious preferences?

$20-$25 is the dinner. $20 bucks doesn't cover the cost of raw carbide. Scrapers I can do from $50 through to $130. $50 being a silver soldered carbide tip on a shank with a plastic handle, through to a brand new in the box Sandvik for $130. (Which is what I get them for).

I had all the tangs on the ones I made, laser cut. That cost me $13 bucks each. Still not entirely sure on the prices for those, as I only got them to the plater today. I'm getting them Zinc coated them black phosphated.

    Regards Phil.

(Adding on Edit) Just to be clear. Its not a requirement to purchase a scraper. I'll have a tonne of equipment here to try out and test on loan. You can do the whole weekend with out laying down an additional cent. I'll have scrapers for you to push. A varst array of them. I've spent this afternnon knocking up some special HSS tips for the guy that needs to know how to work Turcite.

You could get through to Sunday night and find it's a mug's game, and never want to touch one again.

Default Less than a week now.

It feels like it was only a short time ago that I decided that it would be fun to spend a weekend scraping pieces of metal flat. (Try explaining that to most people I know)
Now there's less than a week to go.

I'll be staying at the Best Western on Mahoneys Rd from Fri night onwards.

    Is anyone else staying there?

It would be good to meet up on Friday.

Where did that time go. I'm sure others are staying there. What time are you getting in? I'm bound to be in the shop until 6 or 7 on friday night just polishing the joint.

Your welcome to come down for a beer and break the ice.

Is any one renting a car?

Now that we are this close, I need to point a few things out. Nothing major.

You guys are responsible for your own safety. Whilst I’ll be looking out for you. You are all here as my personal guests. This has nothing to do with my company. This is an out of hours event that just so happens in the place I conduct my work.

You are not on my workcover policy.

It’s a moderately safe endeavour. If I was to write up a JSA (Job Safety Analysis). I only see 2 issues.

1/. There are powered grinders for sharpening. I’ve never seen it happen, but you could fling a piece of carbide. Safety Glasses would be a good idea if you have them. Prescription glasses if you wear them would suffice. I’ll have safety glasses here on loan

2/. The cast iron practice pieces weigh about 6 kg’s. If you were to drop one of those on your toe’s. It will jolly well hurt. If you have safety boots, plan on wearing them.

I’d like to say they are mandatory, but if you don’t own a pair, or it will put you over baggage limit. Substantial leather footware would suffice. Don’t be breaking in a new pair of boots here, whilst we will be on our feet for 11-12 hours.

All I’m saying there, no sandshoes/sneaker’s

    Regard’s Phil
