No problems Bob, as Richard mentioned, I haven’t ordered the iron bar yet. Its actually in Perth, That was the only stuff I could find. Rob mentioned some angle plates from Ebayer Ozmestore. I checked with them and they only had 3. There still an option if anyone wanted to grab them, don’t get in a bidding war with each other though. They do want $69 for the BIN option.

I’ll need to get Joe to have a count in the next week or so, so I can get that underway.

Others have mentioned accommodation; I can do the leg work there. Now that we have a firm date I can go door knocking. I’d need a reasonable estimate of the numbers of people that will be needing a bed. And for which nights. Friday through Sunday, depending on your travel arrangements.

Joe’s in charge of collating all this information, although he is away this week. If you could have a think about that information and get it to him late this weekend or early next week. If you could wait until then, that would be best as he is wading through email on his phone while he is away. In other words, snow him under when he gets home.

The good news is we have hit the critical mass, and its full steam ahead. This would have been hard to do with less than 8 people. With the numbers confirmed, and I think we still have room for any one that has expressed an interest.

Is anyone interested in Carbide shaped blanks, similar to the Sandvik bits? I’ve got onto Carb-I-Tool and bought some rectangular carbide strips. I can get that EDM wire cut with 2 - 60mm radiuses and 2 - 90mm radiuses each side, ready to hone. Cost would be about $25 each including the EDM time. I bought a Sandvik 620 -2525 blade this week, that was $44.

There was someone that hadn’t yet invested in a scraper yet. I have a few new Sandvik’s here also. I’ve spoken to Marko, so he is confirmed for that weekend, between us we should be able to rustle up enough hand scrapers for loan also.
Absolute numbers won’t need to be worked out for a few more weeks yet. As long as we have more than 8 people its going ahead.

Just on the dates. I’m sorry for those that can’t make it, or preferred latter. November and December are really bad for me. My young bloke is doing HSC this year. That would be around Exam time, and he has an 18th birthday in December, with a party at home, so I need those weekends.

And I’d just like to thank, Joe, Greg and Richard for all the background work that has been going on over the past few weeks.

    Regards Phil.

    Gentlemen.

I’ll just throw out a few options regarding accommodation, so you can ponder that, and think about budget, before getting back to Joe. These places are close by, 3 – 5 miles.

This would be my pick of them. Best Western on Mahoneys Road. I just had a babble around the 7th – 10th Oct period, they are showing rooms from $115. And Queen & single bed rooms for $135, if any of you were prepared to bunk together. I’ve not approached them yet, but they might do better on a conference rate if we have the numbers.

    http://mahoneys.bestwestern.com.au/

Excelsior Hotel is a pub with 15 motel units. $75 for a single room / $90 for a twin bed room with a very basic breakfast included. It has pokies, but good pub food, easy walking distance from the Best Western, just across the road. I’ve never seen the rooms there, and I think it might be noisy as it has a 6.00 am late licence for the pokies. Happy to go and have a look at the rooms.

    http://www.theexcelsiorhotel.com.au/

Cheap is the Formule 1 Hotel up on Sydney Road. Its one ring road exit further away, but rooms are $69 night, and I think you can sleep 2 people in them in a bunk bed arrangement.

    http://www.accorhotels.com/gb/hotel-3064-formule1-fawkner/index.shtml

If we could stay away from contacting them for a rate just yet. If there’s a preference and we have sufficient numbers, we might be able to negotiate a better deal.

Other thoughts are you can often find a decent room in town for a reasonable amount, if you wanted to look around. But they are mostly last minute online deals. Melbourne should be quieter that weekend after the grand final. Taxi from town to out here is probably around $30, and traffic won’t be a problem that time of morning on a weekend.

    Regards Phil.

    P.S

In talking to the girl at the Excelsior, she mentioned that there were a lot of workers staying. The ring road is undergoing a widening. So there’s a lot of construction personal staying. It would be wise to book sooner rather than latter, no problem for October yet, but you wouldn’t want till leave it until September.

Phil I don't see why you and Joe should have to worry about accom. You've got more than enough to do. We're big boys and can easily make online bookings. At this stage I will be booking a room for 3 nights at the Fawkner, purely on price and proximity. As I'm driving over in the ute I can ferry one person to and from the course if that's any help.

So those dates are final then?

I got asked whether I was driving down.. I said I will be if I have something to bring back, to which my mother asked if I was bringing something back would it have two legs...

    Bryan.

Its just that we have had a few emails regarding accommodation, from the far distant guys, looking for local knowledge. We were never going to the point of booking places for people. If Joe can tell me there’s 10 people needing a room. I can drop by and see what they can do for us as a group. That’s all.

So I’ve thrown those out that are close by. It might be good if those from out of town, ended up in or about the same place. It will be more social, and easier to round every one up, for whatever we end up doing on the Saturday night. And getting to and from my shop will be easier. Sharing taxi’s, lifts etc.

The Excelsior and Formule probably wont play on price, but the Best Western might if we have 6-8-10 people that need a room and we call this a seminar. That was the only point I made about not tackling them individually at this stage.

Looks to me that there’s many guys going to need accommodation. We can probably save a few bucks for those guys by linking them, to an event.

    Regards Phil.

I take it that these blades are to fit the Sandvik holder are they Phil, if so then you could pencil me in for a couple, and when you say that you have some Sandvik scrapers there, do you mean that you have them to sell, or just to loan to class participants for the class duration. If they are for sale, depending on price, and if you have stated this previously, my apologies, but if the price is not too big a shock, I would be interested, and if I get the carrier, I would definitely get the blades above.

No apologies necessary Phil, we are all very grateful for the sterling efforts you organisers are all putting in.

As I won't be able to fully commit for a week or two, I will just say that I would be happy to share a twin room at The Best Western if a good rate can be had, but my wife says that sometimes I snore. However I don't believe her because I've never heard it I'll bring the earplugs!
On a more serious note, I will depending on price and availability, take the scraper and extra blades even if I can't get to the class.

    Hi Phil,
I'll take two please, that should be more than a lifetimes supply for me.

    Thank you

    Hi Phil,

Thanks for all the efforts putting this together.

Put me down for one of those Carbitool EDM cut inserts, I'd like to see how the different grade of carbide compares with the blanks from HardMetals that I've got. If you want to try one of the ones from HM, let me know.

I'm not fussed about the Accomodation, whatever the collective decision is will be fine with me (and Josh). It would be better if we could all be at the same place. Might be an opportunity to swap ideas and tall stories...

When I get a scraper made (to suit Sandvik Inserts), I'll put up a few pictures.

    Regards
    Ray

PS Thanks .RC 8:00AM on 8th October at 24 Bostock Court Thomastown it is

And just to make it worse, its 6 days after daylight savings starts, so it will still feel like 7.am But the good news is, that wont affect Richard. They don’t have it there. It fades the curtains.

    Phil.

    P.S
For those guys wanting carbide blanks, can you email Joe that, he’s the keeper of the spread sheet. If we can keep all tallies on that for cast blocks, blanks etc. Special requests, things on two legs, etc that would be great.

Phil, sorry you may have already said, but the scraping threads are a little fragmented and I'm already having trouble finding where I saw things. What size are the scraper blades? I have some carbide already but my blanks are much smaller. I'm about to make a third scraper and I thought I'd make this one essentially my version of the Sandvik scraper. It would be probably be wise if I made it capable of taking your/Sandvik's blades as well as the blanks I have.

    Cheers,

    Pete
