Looks good RC...I have been spending my few spare hours welding up a surface plate stand...now I am making shelf inserts for it to hold the various scraping do-dads so that it'll be a one-stop shop for all related tools. Pics tomorrow or the next day.
Greg
Now I have nothing preventing me from scraping in my 3' camel back, and my cast flat master. And all the machine tools that have been waiting for a shop flat reference. Almost all of the cosmetic restorations have been done, now its time to get down to restoring some accuracy and puzzling over surveys and such. I am looking forward to it.

Hi RC,
Looks good, every so often I look at that square you scraped for a bit of inspiration!... the one with the yellow and blue canode..
I've got a little scraping job about to start if you want to take a break from chasing cows...
Regards

So RC, given that it's early days, would you say the third pic would be the right amount of medium?

I scraped a 0.15mm bow out of the table of my Macson grinder... I think they are about 8 inches X 36 inches....
It would surprise you how quick you can cut it out with a BIAX...
Then I had to scrape a bow out of the top swivelling section... And it would surprise you how quickly you can take out a bow like that on a milling machineLight red, the colour of choice for the discerning man.

I was using the middle picture as the thickness of blue I was using, however the third picture would have done... Just scrape the BIG patches, and leave the little spots as they get taken off with the stone.. I am a big believer in stoning now, provided it is done sensibly..
Those pictures were only taken after about three passes... The mill got it pretty flat...Light red, the colour of choice for the discerning man.

I have been keeping the eye in also and putting the new surface plate to good use
here are some pic's of my shaper ram
the ram on the surface plate this scraping gives you a workout 45kg it weighs

first spotting
Attachment 202220
spotting after 15 rounds probably only 2 or 3 to go (thats lifting the ram 30 times 45kgx30=1350kg man were my arms getting tired)

scraping the gib because the i just could not lift the ram again
Attachment 202223
be careful carrying 45kg of cast the slightest bump on a hard surface takes chunks off

Hi Harty,
That's coming up very nicely, are you hand scraping, or did you get a biax?
I've been wondering how I'm going to set up a crane to handle large heavy lumps of cast iron on an off the surface plate.
Lowering that ram carefully onto the surface plate is the tricky bit... I wonder if the scara robot could handle it...
The surface plate mounting looks good, any details?
Regards

Hi Ray
no Biax all by hand (still looking for one at the right price)
dont you have a Josh lift installed already
the scara robot wont lift the ram but the fanuc m1 would (light goes on above head) you could have it blue it flip it over install a camera and some algorithum to find the blue and have the m1 scrape it as well
probably be faster to just scrape it by hand but could be a cool project
can take a couple of pics tomorrow for you of the stand nothing fancy just made it out of left over bits
cheers

Hi Harty,
The Josh lift has escaped to do a bit of contract control system design and switchboard assembly for a few weeks...
So, let me get this straight... you are heaving a 45 kg ram around the workshop and hand scraping... I wish I was that fit..
I think Stuart is getting close to having his stand done, and I saw Greg's a week or so back, I think he's got it finished now. I've yet to finally decide if I cut up my old stand to fit the new surface plate meantime it's temporarily living on a rolling trolley.
Must be getting close to having a surface plate stand show and tell..
Regards

Harty you're doing it wrong, it's called hand scraping, not finger gouging.
Seriously, I would be finding another way to lift that. Before I started scraping it.

PDW you are welcome to collect yours on the way back south, it 'll keep, plus you don't want to be lugging an extra 200 kgs to SYD and back I reckon.
