Screw in milling cutter adaptor
I'm looking for an adaptor so I can use plain shank 6mm cutters in my threaded shank holder. I have one for 1/4 cutters(which fits in the 16mm collet), but most cutters here (including most of the cutters I already have) are metric. Anyone ever seen one? I'm guessing they won't be cheap
I guess is wouldn't hurt to try making one but the 6mm hole needs to be ground I think
I'll most likely end up buying other sized cutters in threaded shank from the UK atm. One day I may end up getting a ER40 collet chuck.

Stuart,
I posted a reply earlier today, but the black hole seems to have consumed it.
Apologies if this ends up being a duplicate.
I have also pondered the problem on how to make a INT30 holder (for me, a standard cutting tool).
Consider doing the job in reverse.
Set topslide to the required taper (separate subject).
Cut 30 diameter bar to the required holder length and face in the lathe.
Drill and bore the holder to fit the target bit, the centre indicator for you.
Remove and add the grub screw or clamp to the holder for the target bit.
Put some scrap bar in lathe and machine to duplicate the target bit.
Clamp the holder to the scrap bar, carefully face and centre drill.
Support with tailstock centre and machine the shape and taper of the holder.
Install fixed steady, drill and tap for the mill draw bar.
Happy machining,
John.

OOPS to all,
A response to the wrong thread.
I did respond to Stuart a couple of days ago on this thread, the black hole is all consuming.

Hi Stuart,
Without looking at you chuck and collet you might be able to make up a round shim to slip in, made out of sheet metal or something.
You would be better off getting a hold of a ER collet chuck and collets if you can, to save the hassle of making adapters.
I know we spoke about ER40's before and they are a bit expensive but the ER32 set with 19 collets are only just on $150 posted to you from CTC tools. A set with 10 collets works out at $119. I have one of these and they do the job for tooling up to 19mm.

Dave, I will get a set of ER40 one of these days, but I like that the screw in cutters dont have to be done up so tight, the adaptor is just to let me use some of the special 6mm end mills I have(like ballnose) until I get an ER40. I guess even if I could find an adaptorit would cost almost as much as a cheap ER40 holder anyway. In the mean time I'll have a look around for some 0.175mm shim.

I have used coffee can and coke cans as shim, can't remember the sizes now.
I know different brand cans were sometimes different thicknesses. It might be worth a try.
