    Hi RayG,
For clarification...I'm pretty certain that the vice you now have on your Varnamo is an early Alba or Invicta Vice.
These earlier Shaper Vices had the "rectangular" Bolting Base...
...the later vices produced by the "Elliott Group"...after Elliott's takeover of the Alba/Invicta assets...had the "squarer" base...

...see my photo of one of my Elliott vices I posted previously in another Shaper post...

...you can see the the rest of the Vice is identical...and the jaw width and maximum opening width also correlate with the Elliott/Alba/Invicta vice which was originally supplied with the 14 inch, 18 inch and 21 inch stroke machines...

...enjoy it!...It is a brilliant Shaper Vice.

    Regards,
    Adrian (Neebs)

Here is not one but two... I'm willing to part with one, I'm just not sure which one yet...
I'd be interested in one for my Prema, don't care which one. Only got a ratty big drill vise ATM. I can pick up from your place in my travels.

Cash or there might be something I have that we could trade.

These shaper vises are like hen's teeth.

I too am in need of one with an 8" mounting hole pattern.

I am starting to think that the "pattern" part will be making up a pattern and having it cast.

    Hi PDW, Toggy,

The big one cost me $300, and the "small" one $400, I'm happy to eventually sell for the same price I paid.

At this stage, I'm not in any tearing hurry to decide which one to keep, but the smaller one is the front runner at present. The big one needs an engine crane just to move it, whereas the smaller one, I can just barely lift..

Meantime, I got the faceplates unpacked.

These were on a pallet with a couple of electric motors that I wanted, and it's another example of the stupidity of auctioneers, there's a heap of lathes that went out the door without faceplates etc.. etc.. and there was a box of T-bolts on the table with the vise, so my good deed for the day was to slip the box of t-bolts back onto the Cinci mill they belonged to.. The tafe guy supervising the equipment pickup clocked what they were and what I was doing... and pointed me to which machine they belonged to...

So this mission is to re-unite face plates with lathes that can make use of them...

These are free to good home ( or trade ) to whoever has a need, but pickup only...

The big ones are 16" D1-6 cam lock, and Bryan has his name on one already. I haven't measured the others..

    Regards
    Ray

This picture is for Phil (aka Steamwhisperer)

Phil correctly identified the part from an end-on blurry picture buried amongst other parts, in a demonstration that he has the same super-powers of observation that Stuart has...

    Hi Ray,
I'd be interested in a faceplate 13" or 16"(or both lol)
But my need isnt great as I would just be using them to make my rotary table bigger. So I'm happy to go down the list if others can make better use of them.

Nice bearing, was that hidden on the pallet?

    Hi Stuart,

Done and dusted, I'll put them aside for you.

The bearing is a timken tapered roller, but the inside of the tapered part has zig zag welding all around the inside... Joe picked up that it was probably done to shrink it so that it could be removed... I think I might be able to grind the welds off and make a rotating welding table..

I didn't get a faceplate with my Monarch & would like to have one. It's D1-6 so I'd like to put my hand up for one please. Pickup isn't a drama provided you weren't in any hurry to get it out the door. Not sure exactly when I'll drive back south, was thinking September might be good if the mooted meet at Sovereign Hill gets up.

When you decide which vise to keep I'd like to discuss the other one. Friend of mine says he has one in a container somewhere and I can have it if he ever finds it, but that may well be the 12th of Never. OTOH will the big one fit on my 20" Prema shaper table????

Thought this shaper vice might interest some of you.
The video is pretty neat also.

    Hi Matthew,

Love that video, it was posted earlier in Ewan's thread on Queen City, but it's worth being posted again..

    Faceplate update,

Both 16 inch and both 12 inch faceplates and 1 steady have found potential homes.

Still have a couple of 7" and one steady that's about 8" bed to center...

    Regards
    Ray

PPS LamestLama, did you get that surface table yet? ...
Ray, It was great to meet you in person and thanks for the bench

As I write the bench is in my shed. It has a 20mm thick steel top and weighs a lot. Unfortunately there was no forklift when I collected so I had to do the lift in two goes with my engine hoist. One to get one set of legs on then another to get the other set on. I used the same method to get it off. About half a days work in total but well worth it.

    Regards

    Eric

    Hi Eric,

That's got to be one the best workbenches you will ever find, did you figure out if those recessed cap screws were for what we thought, that is levellling and taking twist out?

Just getting it into the workshop is a pretty fair exercise in itself, I would have thought it impossible without a forklift, nicely done...

Likewise, it was great to meet up, I look forward to the next time..

    Regards
    Ray
PS Got a picture of the bench in it's rightful resting place.. (new home that is!)

Ray must have made it home in decent time. I had the pleasure of having him here in town for dinner, over a feed he was telling me about that bench.

The set screws are for leveling up. The picture was taken before I started moving it inside the shed. I forgot to take one once it was inside the shed.
