N series Jacobs Super Chuck Rebuilds and others.
This has been prompted by my buying from overseas, several Jacobs SuperChucks, which is what they call their N series chucks, which have ball bearings, as against most other chucks which have plain bearings, and which therefor are unable to grip drill bits as tightly as the N series chucks. I do not claim this as the "last word" on the subject, but the procedures for overhauling the chuck, and information allowing you to select the correct parts for it will be found in the links below.
This info is for anyone wanting to rebuild or restore function to a chuck which is either worn or loaded with contaminants which are affecting its usability. The second link has toward the bottom, several hot links to a Jacobs Catalogue of around 2003, and I have noticed that some of the cat. Nos. appear to have changed from those quoted in the first link. It is important to note that there have been subtle changes in some Jacobs chucks which have identical model numbers, but at least some of the later chucks have their appropriate rebuild kits listed on the nose of the chuck. This first link has the later information I think, but I have not been able to verify it for certain.

And here is a procedure from Jacobs themselves, I hope that someone finds this useful,

I have three N chucks. A pair of 14s and an 8 1/2. They don't slip.
I have rebuilt the three of them with new old replacement part kits purchased cheaply on US Ebay. The chucks themselves were reasonably inexpensive Ebay purchases.
I just had a look at a price I scribbled next to a 14N in my old Blackwoods catalogue, $348.30 plus GST in 2006. The little 8 1/2 was $272 plus. In comparison, a Jacobs heavy duty keyless chuck, 1-13mm, similar capacity to the 14N , was $142 plus gst back in the same year.
A tight grip at a stiff price.

Yes Bob they are much more expensive than the general purpose chucks, and while I haven't made a careful check, I'd say your 2006 prices from Blackwoods, are in the ballpark for current U.S.prices, in US$s. The trouble with U.S. suppliers is that unless you can get a whole lot at a time, the postage kills you. For the same price to get one sleeve for a 14N posted here, you could post about a dozen complete 14N chucks with arbors. That US$49 flat rate box is good for 20 pounds weight for international, AIIRC about 70 pounds domestic. MMMMM couldn't you have a field day with that, - a 3HP 3phase electric motor probably weighs less than 70lbs!
