    Default Serious counselling needed

I was in a little second hand shop the other day and spotted a couple of small jeweller's ovens. These things go up to around 1000 degrees as far as I can tell, which makes them usable for melting things like Al, as well as heat treating etc - they are electric but not atmosphere controlled.
Does anyone do their own heat treating? Are there any other uses that something like this might have that would make them a desirable piece of shop kit - they seem to be cheap as, but I don't want to get something that takes up space just for the hell of it.

    Why the hell not !

Just buy one instead of both of them - then you're actually saving space

    Hi Michael,

I'd grab them if the price is right. 1000 C is useful, it would be nice if they went a bit higher, say 1250 C, then you could heat treat HSS. I wouldn't worry about the controller, you can get any number of good pid controllers from ebay pretty cheap these days.

I've been finishing off my heat treatment furnace, and I should update the thread with a few pictures.. https://www.woodworkforums.com/f65/he...uction-137007/

    Default heat

The TAFE I attended has a heat treatment oven in the machine shop or whatever the term is . During my time there, one of the teachers was using it to make parts for his Harley Motorbike . He made a new clutch plate from some type of tool steel ... after hardening it in the furnace, he ground it with a cylindrical grinder machine to the final dimension. He was happy with the result and it worked well in his bike .Mike

    Default Too late for counselling

    The things I do...
I buckled and bought the larger of the two for $295, The cavity is 220x110x200 (WxHxD) and it looks to be in decent condition. The fire brick is clean, not crumbling and something like 75mm thick. Apparently it was used by a now deceased jeweller for enamelling copper. I want to chase down details from the maker (if they still exist) on what it can do.
I'm not planning on using it just yet, but I figured that it was a good price and I was unlikely to get a deal like that again soon, and I could always sell it to RC at a wildly inflated price later on!

    Hi Michael,

    Good pickup.

That's a handy size, and would be very useful. Enamelling is done at I think is over 800 C or so..

A couple of hidden gotcha's with that design, remember that the inside of the door is going to be at 1000 C + when you open it... could be exciting if you are standing too close...

Another tip, is that it would be worthwhile to look at installing a cheap temperature controller with a K-type TC, even if it's just to give you an accurate readout of the temperature. It would be better to upgrade the controller as well, but not essential if the existing one is working.

Here is a package deal that has pretty much everthing you would need

Nice score Michael, Not something you come across at that price everyday.

Hi Stuart, LOL you should see it now...since you were here, I've finished the handle and over center locking, and safety interlock, that cuts the power to the elements when the door is opened.

I'll put up some pictures in the next few days... if I ever manage to actually finish it..

    Regards
    Ray
