Douggie here doesn't mind a deep cut with a parting blade have made full table length tee bolts 10'' just for some therapy,light cuts and good rake and side clearance required.Also made a chuck removal tool 2 inch hex with a 3/4'' square cut on one end in the shaper.Hex end for the 3 jaw and square end for the 4 jaw,A hole drilled through in the middle of hex for a tommy bar or use a 2''A F spanner for the hex.a crack with a dead blow shifts most screw on chucks.
with the Douglas it has a built in safety feature if the cut is too harsh the drive belts slip hard to break stuff.On the other hand the 24 inch Invicta aint so forgiving and will break a tool clean off in a ''dig in situation'' they are so powerful.Have always been careful as I saw a big shaper take job vice and tee slots,depositing in on the floor about 3 feet in front of the machine.It wasnt me who did that but that ''crunch and bang'' has lasted many years in my memory. Nice work Ben, as Phil says they are addictive!
With clamping things right on one side of the vice it is best to pack the other side of the vice to the same width. That way the vice jaw wont want to twist.

John, I bumped my vice when i first got my shaper, managed to get to the clutch before it hit the floor though. I now have my clutch set so it should slip with a bite but i still have managed to break a 3/4 x 1/8" parting blade. That was before i bought the bandsaw, i used to do a lot of cutting off.

You jinxed me! Tried to part off some excess material on a knurling toolholder with the shaper. Not too good a result. I must admit I didn't remember to reset the parting blade to a shorter length. I was able to take some cuts (about 4 or 5) before I took too big a bite and it went pear shaped. Didn't fully snap the parting blade but severely damaged it, will need to be reground before I can use it again.

What I intend to do is make the knurling toolholder fit a clamp style knurler I received for my birthday recently. To do that I need to remove the end that holds the knurls and enlarge the toolholder slot by a couple of mm's. I'll also use the toolholder to hold larger pieces of material that I want to hold in the lathe toolpost for use with the slitting saw.

One of those pants staining moments.had a large parting tool shatter like shrapnel in the 6m.was a crack in the blade I didnt see.5/8 blade a bit shorter now and the pieces of the shattered tool to remind me.Dare say that odd size replacement would be a bite in the pocket.Cheers J.
