The only real issue with bearings, as you may be aware is the input shaft and its housing. This has already been described in previous posts. No motor was supplied and I have not looked at the drive step pulley and shaft. I think the bearings here are of the pillow type. The main gear shaft and the rocker arm pivot appear to be ok.

I have thought about fixing the input shaft and housing. The housing is just part of the main base casting and has no bush of any kind. I have mostly decided to leave it due to the difficulty of boring it out and fitting a bush, boring the bush to size, then machining the shaft while still allowing it to fit in the bush. Pressing an undersized sleeve into the drive gear I guess.

I watched Donald R. Cossett rebuild his "Son of Keith" Sibley Drill Press in a series of videos. A large part of this job involved boring out the main shaft and fitting bushes. This gave me some ideas, and I have made some drawings on doing this repair, but I still do not know if it will be worth the trouble it will involve. I am still thinking about it. I think it will be difficult to provide support for a boring bar. I can bolt the boring apparatus to the outer face of the shaft boss by drilling tapping holes to bolt it to, flat on the face. I think it may need support from the inside as well. I don't think that a single point mounting will be enough. Maybe I can attach something to the top ways.

I thought of using my large electric drill as a drive unit. 750w, variable speed and 2 gears. I think it will be strong enough. Maybe I can utilise the drive motor I bought for my mill as a feed mechanism.

It might be better to see how it works first before I expend too much time on this.

I have now laid the shaper base on its side so that I can paint the lower part of the inside, still in matt black. This will be a simple job. Only one go to get it all. I am not overly concerned at putting on 2 coats, but I am being careful to get full coverage, and overlapping quite a bit.

The next step will be to stand it up and start on the external colour. Again, I stress that this may not be for a while. No weekend work yet, so I had a bit of spare time. Who knows about next weekend, but if I have some spare time I will probably be going to my step son's big 3 birthday celebrations. After that weekend I don't think I will have any time to spare from my sleep. At least I hope to make some extra money to buy some of what I need for the shed.

    Hi Dean,

Sounds good. I re-read this entire thread the other night just to get on top of things again. I notice that the base on my shaper is separate too, held on with 4 bolts inside.

I finally got some blue paint on today, which you would know if you have read my post in "What did you learn today?".

The colour card is angled up and copped the flash more than the painted surface so it shows lighter than it is. It is still a bit darker than the paint, but it is still wet. I am waiting to see it dry. The base is finished inside and has been puttied, but I missed sanding 1 bit up the top so that needs doing before I attack it with the blue.

    The color card is white?
Depending on the paint undercoat color can have a huge effect on what the top coat looks like. Though maybe this is more in the spray painting paint thicknesses.

I like it..... it might even be better than grey.... I cant make up my mind on changing machine colors..... sometimes I'm tempted to go with colors that you need sunglasses for.... other times I think "leave it as it came out the factory"

The colour card is "Dance Studio Blue". You can make out the printing on it. The white is where the surface peeled off with the tape that bunnies stuck over the can with the colour card under the tape.

There is no undercoat. Straight top coat. Spray paint? I'm using a brush. I don't have enough spare time to spray it. With a brush I can do a bit whenever, and then just a quick cleanup of the brushes in turps.

"Changing machine colours". If someone could tell me what colour it was I would think about using that colour, but nobody knows. Harty said that when he got it, there wasn't any recognisable paint on it. I decided to go with a colour I liked.

I got another coat on some bits tonight, including the ram. The colour has not changed much since last night. The colour that shows on my computer is pretty close to the real thing. I have started painting the outside of the base as well.

    Hi Dean,

Looking good mate. I like the colour too. I came so close to buying a can of Tractor Blue in killrust (or whatever the brand) but became indecisive! Originally I thought the the colour of my shaper was original but I'm not so sure now as there are parts of it that have chips in the bondo and it's still blue! There is a lot of grey underneath but I am yet to decide if it's the original colour or just the undercoat.

I have mine back together and it's running again. I just need to make another gasket for the gearbox cover and fill it with oil. It certainly runs smoother and quieter with oil than grease!

Okay, I said I would post some pictures once I had finished some painting. Almost finished now.

There are some small bits to be done and some parts that I will do once it is reassembled.
