    Default New Shaper

I managed to pick up my new shaper today. Had a good trip, had a look thru Peters shed and some other stuff stored where the shaper was. It is good to meet up with others from the forum and see how they work. I did a little bit of shopping. Found some 1500mm LED tubes to fit a standard flouro batten for $25 at Aldi. I bought one to try it. It works fine. Wish I had got more now. 5ft flouros aren't very common. I happened to buy half a dozen(is dozen another imperial measurement?) of them cheap a few years ago. I have 5 in use in my shed. I also have a 4ft LED tube with no decent batten yet. I planned on cutting one down. Probably easier to buy one.

Anyway here's a couple of pictures.

And the last one is the main problem at the moment. I am looking for some extra large size floaties for the trailer.

    Access Track.jpg

This is the track to the back of the shed. The only other way is to drive thru 2 paddocks and come in from the other side. This may be possible but then it also may not be. I will have to go for a walk and see.

Peter has already stripped the shaper and cleaned it up in a hot dip so what you see is mostly bare cast iron. I plan on removing the bigger pieces to lift it off the trailer. I will put the shaper on a pallet at the back of the shed then clean the oil off that has run over the outside from the workings, shafts etc so it can be puttied and painted. Colour is the next problem. There is one colour I have decided to avoid! I could brush on some Federation Green Killrust. It suited the woodsplitter. I do know it will have to be cheap.

    Default Only in the Bush

Not much more to report yet except we are forcast for 10 - 20mm rain so I decided to put the shaper under cover. I took it around the back of the shed via the paddocks. I cut a stuffed fence to avoid the mushy gateway. I could have used the track but I did not want to dig the ruts any deeper than I had to.

Whilst researching the type of paint to use on the shaper I came across this picture on PM.

I could do my old Fiat tractor to match.

Dean, any good quality Industrial Enamel from the likes of Solver, Protec or Haymes should do the trick and they can be brushed (on smaller surfaces) and sprayed.

I know Solver and Protec can supply these enamels as a machine tint and can match basically any colour you want, they have standard formulae for all the major tractor and earth moving colours.

I am not planning to go overboard with the painting. It is already stripped completely bare and only needs all the rest of the operations...................

Pink is out. I fe3lt that the orange was a rude thing to do to a Monarch Lathe. A shaper also demands a slightly less vivid colour. I like the look of Wattyl Killrust Pewter or Navigator. Would prefer to see them in real life not on computer screen first tho. This paint can also be tinted with all white based tints. I am trying to make a list of everything I will need so I can work out the cost. I don't want it to cost more than the purchase price, in fact far less would be great.

    Hi Dean,

glad to see you got it home safe. Having stripped back to bare metal is a bonus.

    Cheers,

    Dean,

I am doing a milling machine in the Wattyl pewter. It is a medium grey and comes up nice.

Sounds good. I am currently leaning towards a bit more of a blue and may opt for the Navigator although I have no idea what "Navigator" is meant to imply, colour wise. I will wait until I have seen colour cards in real life before I decide. Not sure when that will be at the moment.

Latest update. I still have not been into town (Any decent town) to look at colours?

I have got the shaper off the trailer. I had to. We are taking a steer to the abattoirs tommorrow so we can have some more meat. Yum Yum.

The lifting trailer which has been mentioned and pictured before (New Mill Thread) has struck again! I had removed some of the weight but not much. The lifting trailer worked perfectly. First I made a new hitch. It used to have a normal ball hitch but I realised that as the force is upwards on the ball when lifting a weight this would not be good. When using it for hay we can travel a bit out to the paddock. This hitch supports in both directions. I plan to make a guide in a pyramid shape to guide the drawbar onto the hitch one day.

The shaper is now sitting on a pallet at the rear of my shed. I have removed the table and the ram. The ram operating lever and the other bit on top of it which pokes out the top, had been removed previously along with the tool mount/clapper.

    Default Colour

SWMBO picked up a killrust colour chart yesterday. The difference between the colour of "Navigator" in the pdf file chart and in the printed chart is extreme. Scrap that one. Way too dark. I don't like any of the Blues or greens. Next step is to go into town myself and pick a colour from the general colour selection and get a can tinted. At least they should have my colour in stock!

Looking good! Navigator? It conjures up a nautical type theme, maybe that's why it's blue. Actually I think I got that the wrong way around. Blue conjures up a nautical/marine theme, hence the name navigator?

Dunno how they come up with half these names. I bet there is a Uni degree that specialises in colour name making! It may even require a double degree.

That shaper just looks better each time I see it. Lucky I don't know where you live. A bit off topic but couple weeks ago I bought myself a RC model plane to compensate myself for missing out on a shaper! Boy there's some interesting "stuff" in the way of RC models these days. So many hobbies, so little time

I know exactly what you mean about RC models. I have looked myself from time to time. I have a partially finished Yacht that I built myself from drawings. Built a mould and did it in GRP. It has not been looked at in some years as I got stumped making a sail control system which had to be installed before the deck went on. At the time they were expensive to buy. I may just buy one now. I am pretty sure they are available cheap. I was planning on sailing this yacht on my dam.

There is some connection with "Navigator" and blue. What colour does "Ruffles" conjour up? It is from an old Wattyl chart.

Yep, sorry about hijacking your thread but RC hobbies are about 1/10 the price from 15 years ago, and with heaps more stuff! Ruffles conjures up a yellow colour. Don't know why...

No sweat Simon. Not only 1/10 the price but all accessible right from your computer from huge numbers of outlets.

Ruffles is a very pale green. Don't ask me cos I don't know! I do know I am not going to paint the shaper that colour.
