Hi Joe & Dean,
Joe, that's a great idea. Now I know why Landrovers were never painted white underneath! I have already started painting but only the rough cast parts such as the bull gear and rocker arm (thanks Dean!) etc. I have painted these a very similar colour to the original dark red colour. The actual insides of the machine I will paint another time, right now all I'm going to do is give inside a bit of a clean. I can't be bothered right now lifting it outside to degrease and jet wash. However, I think I will take on board what you said and at a later date paint the inside white, or at least a very light grey.
Dean,
Thanks for the info, I thought that maybe that bush may have been a repair. WRT your thread, I have read that back to back but I think I better re-read it. There are several bits of info that I can't remember reading.
Cheers,

In the process of laying my shaper on its side so I can paint the bottom section of the inside, I happened to look at the bull gear boss/bearing housing, and noticed that it wasn't there. I then went out to the shed and had a look where all the bits are stored. There it was. It is steel, removable, and to repair the bore would be a simple lathe boring job and fitting of a bush. I wish the driven gear housing was the same. It is in fairly good condition.

Hi Dean,
Good to hear about the bearings in your shaper. Mine have a bit of wear but certainly no more than would be expected for the age of the machine. All these bearings would be quite easily repaired with a bit of lathe work and a new bush. The issue would be the expense given the size of the bushes required, I could easily spend more on bronze than I paid for the shaper!
I'm not overly concerned about the bearings, in fact I'm confident that they will last another 20 years with my use!
Well I got the bull gear back together and in place and I got the rocker arm in place too. I know this was going to be a quick clean up job but I couldn't help myself. I have removed and striped the gearbox now. While I spent so much time and effort cleaning and painting the internal parts, it would be a shame for them to be driven by a gearbox full of grease, oil and sludge. So now they are all out. I figured while it's out I may as well repaint it too. Painting the gearbox, an external part means I am forced to make a decision on the final colour. I like it's current colour which is a dark blue but I don't think it's original. I'm thinking the original colour is a light grey but can't be 100% sure I may be being fooled by the undercoat. There are parts of the body that has chipped or missing bondo yet it is painted blue.
Think I will paint it a light grey. Machinery grey is too dark though so I will have to look at other colours in the kill rust or equivalent paint.

When I said "It is in fairly good condition.", I was referring to the Bull Gear Bearing. Did not read that way.
Are your bearing housings removable like my Bull Gear Housing?

I finished the inside of my shaper tonight. Now it is just the outside.
