    Default Sidchrome red?

I have an old metal case for a socket set probably made in the late 60's early 70's and I want to restore it. Can any tell me what color red that Sidchrome used back then or what to use to restore it with??/ Thnx

I can't help you with the colour scheme, however for a timeline, I bought my 'Red' set late 1981.

Wattyl Killrust Epoxy Gloss Enamel 'Delicious Red' is very close. The Sidchrome red used on the steel cases that I have which date from the 80's is probably just slightly more towards orange.
It's available in a spray can too!

The RED set I have came from my dad and it is all metal no plastic inside and imperial. Was great when I drove old english cars. The metric set is still red and Australian made but plastic holder inside that has had some foam added behind as it ids thin in places. Broke the ratchet in dads set with 110kg of me swinging on the end. They repaired it for free. The injury I sustained took some weeks longer to fix.

Still use both sets and some whit worth ones every week.

Reminds me of my Dad's set. Once upon a time he was trying to remove the crank pulley bolt from an ancient mazda 626. Could not get the bastard to move by hand with a sidchrome sliding T bar, nor with a cheater tube slipped over it and using a good sized mallet to give it what for. In the end, we removed the lead from the dizzy, lined up the cheater tube with the driveshaft, hopped in the car and gave it a few whacks with the starter motor. Then a few more. Finally it gave way and the bolt slipped out. We inspected the sliding T bar and found that the 1/2 square drive had been rotated around on the face of the sliding bit by about 15 - 20° or so.

Despite that, its given another 20 years of service on top of that, still hasnt broken. Its done a few more crank pulleys in its time, even with starter motors helping out, but none were a match for that poxy mazda!

I've recently refurbished a pair of old Sidchrome Australia toolboxes. Stripped down, sand blasted and repainted. Sidchrome colours today are a different shade to the old days. The closest match I could find to the 70's vintage was Galmet Signal Red. It has a slightly Orange tint. For more recent vintages, then Galmet Bright Red is a good match.
