C6 Gear Combo Program
Ian,
I've written a program for C6 gear combinations(Windows). It's very basic so far.
Please tell me what you think!

Software Program
Hi Andrew,
I told you how brilliant you are! My god. Where do you guys get all your brains??
Can you enter more than 15 gears? The original Sieg set has 16, and can you add extra gears like 72 and 100?
May I suggest you send your posting to Graham Wharton, Andrew. He is so much more clued up with this type of software that I am.
But yes, I would buy it. Can it be used with C4 C3 C2 lathes as well?
I've sent my gearing results to the company. Waiting for response. It is very consuming Andrew. I had to balance my gear combos, Sieg's, yours, Graham's; work out the most accurate combo's, test the math, test the fit, cut threads and finally make a chart.
I had so many combo's I became confused, spreadsheeted the results, cross-checked errors and percentage errors, and I'm still finding transcription errors. Finally I hope some good will come out of it for C6 owners, who like me, were so disappointed that the lathe would only cut a few basic threads, many of which were relatively useless - like 11, 14, 19 tpi!
Regards and thanx again for your invaluable help and advice. Ian

I have set it up to suit the gears that came with my C6 ie 25, 30, 33, 40, 42, 50, 52, 60, 66, 70, 72, 80(2off), 90(2off). i don't know what the other gear is, unless this includes the reversing idler.
It would only take a few minutes to add blank spaces for extra gears if required. I tried a hypothetical 127T gear in the program and came up with many exact imperial combinations, but many would not pass the fitment checks. These fitment checks were based on the dimensions of the banjo on my particular lathe, but I cannot see there being a substantial difference with others off the same production line. These fitment check parameters can be altered in the program if necessary, or can be disabled on the front screen as needed to account for modifications to the lathe, such as the variable spindle idler shown here (https://www.woodworkforums.com/f65/yo...ml#post1743732)
You don't need to buy it, just ask and we can arrange to get it to you, or anyone else who wants/needs it.

Software program
Great News Andrew. Would love a copy when completed.
The 16th gear is a 25. There are 2 x 25, 2 x 80 and 2 x 90. A mate brought a 72 and a 100 for me to play with!. So I have 18. Of course all you engineers just make whatever gears you want, don't you??!!
The physical dimensions of the C6 seem to be critical within the program. Otherwise it becomes like all the other software programs - generating x no. of combos that may or may not fit.
Graham's program, done in conjunction with some other software engineers, seems to give only combos that fit. Not one of his hundred combos hasn't fitted. I was ready to use the 1st/third/fifth or 2nd/4th rule to swap order within combos but never needed to. Amazing really.
Regards. Ian

Gearing
Andrew I just re-read your post of today. You said you had a 72. But my set has a 70 and 75. Was that a typo or has the company varied sets? If so, wonder what that difference of 3 teeth has made to the supplied gear chart?
John, would you be interested in making a "proper" chart with my revised gear sets?

Ian,
I've only just written the program, so it should be able to give only working solutions. The solutions I have previously sent you were found using an Excel spreadsheet, and did not account for fitment problems .
I've also been thinking through the limitations of the change gear system, and devising simple solutions to reduce/remove these limitations. This would allow usable and very accurate gear combos to be used.
The first solution is the variable spindle idler gear size, which substantially increases the number of close solutions that fit. Done.
The next solution is to make a somewhat longer banjo/quadrant, with a locking quadrant slot, which will give more workable close solutions again.
The final solution is to make the gear cluster shafts on the banjo 3 deep, which will remove many (or most) of the cluster interference problems.
Each solution will build on the capabilities of the previous solution to make most gear combo solutions mountable.
The leadscrew interference problem will be difficult(read nearly impossible to remove) to overcome, but it is minor in the whole scheme of things.
These solutions will be posted when completed.
I expect these mods to allow the C6 to cut almost any thread pitch, metric or imperial, within reason and easily, accurately, including BA and odd pitch threads.

New Thread Charts
C6 users;
have completed the BA thread chart with 17 accurate combinations, fitted and tested.
Thanx to Mahgnia for the copy of his software package. Extremely useful since being refined.
I'll post when I figure out what I need to do.
