For those in or around Sydney, it might be worth your while giving Mick Moyles a call on 02 9799 8444. When I was last there several years ago, they had lots of different smaller sizes, say <10mm, and I cant remember what they had in larger stuff. The stock appeared to be older stock bought at auction, and was IIRC in 12" lengths. I don't recall prices, but they are usually pretty reasonable in my limited experience.

McJings have silver steel https://mcjing.com.au/categorybrowse...?categoryid=39
For those in Sydney, it is right at the back of the shop under the window.
McJings have a well regarded mail order system, and prices are usually reasonable, but I have no idea how competitive they are for silver steel.
Blackwoods also sell silver steel, and many industrial suppliers would also stock it.
Good luck with your project.

Most steel suppliers I've been to have a rack of it tucked away in a corner somewhere rusting away quietly. It's not hard to get, but doesn't exactly leap off their shelves.

Depending on how much you want it may also be cheaper the cop the freight and but from Victor in the states. Drill Rod - 3 foot bars of 01 oil hardening drillrod - round tool steel - inch sizes.
Also depending on what you want it for you can buy ground 4140 (and probably other grades) from Bohler. Much cheaper but if its under 25mm i think you have to buy the whole length....
I bought some 3/4" ground for the D1-4 pins and another job i just did, even with freight to here it was only about $13/meter. Yeah i had to buy the whole length but i'm sure i'll use it up!

How long are the lengths of this? I think the silver steel was costing me an average of around $20 or so a length, but the lengths are short and the price obviously depends on the diameter. I haven't bought any for a while as I just keep lengths of most popular sizes in stock and take off what I need. I only use metric, but imperial sizes are also still readily available.

I bought a few lengths from Victor a couple of years ago along with some tooling. 3ft lengths. Every price I have seen in OZ has made me turn pale. Ask for it around here and you will probably get a blank look

Minitech in Brisbane - good prices and excellent service (walk in or mail order) - typically 300mm lengths, but will cut to suit for shorter or longer if you ask.
I've also bought from McJings (mail order) when I was buying some HSS blanks.
I tried ordering from Blackwoods once - price was 2-3 times what Minitech was asking.

Sorry i forgot to answer you Pete, they are the standard 6m lengths. Not such a problem for me as it is likely to be used up, but may be an issue for others.
On a side not i'm more than happy to sell short lengths at cost+post to anyone here. I only have .750" at the moment.
