So you need a simple slot in steel and you just have a metal lathe.
So here is how i do it. A simple angle plate bolted to the cross slide and a suitable end mill holder. Plus some clamps. The plate was pre drilled on the ends where the slot will be just to make it easier to line it up with the cutter...Bob

Hi Bob,
I did a bit of this before I got a mill, its a little painful... but it gets you there. Sure beats a hacksaw and file
Just one thing, you should be using a slot drill..... of course if you dont have one then you got to do what you got to do.

Hi Stuart,
Why should you use a slot drill? I thought as long as you are not plunge cutting, an end mill is fine. Is there something I need to learn?
I don't own a single slot drill, only end mills!

Hi Simon,
With an end mill there is a side load on the cutter when the flute starts cutting that isnt there with a slot drill. So its likely the sides of the slot wont be as nice.
I've also read you can fill the flutes of an endmill when cutting a slot.(not that thats likely to be an issue for me)

Stuart, can you illustrate that in some way for a simpleton like me? I'm with Simon and thought they were the same when cutting just with the flutes...
Cheers,
Joe

Well a sketch would be easier but I'm on my tablet
With a slot drill there is pretty much only one cutting edge in the work at a time. with a 4 flute endmill, one flute is cutting as one leaves and one starts.

I have lots of other end mills and a milling machine now but the parts to use my lathe as a mill were handy and the cutter was already in the holder so i just grabbed it. Years ago i didn't have a mill but i found a nice little horizontal which still would need an angle plate just like my lathe...Bob
