My sj12 grinder
Hi all
A few weeks ago i bought this grinder at a clearing sale. Got it really cheap and thought it would clean up alright. I also got a a couple of spare wheel arbors and the balancing jig for it. Then after i bought it i noticed that the table was not sitting in the vees properly (should have checked over it a bit better ) so its off with the table to sort it out. I'm pretty sure it happened because someone had tried to pick it up with forks under the table.

Hi
Great I need a wheel balancing jig
Welcome. Will be interesting to see what you find......would be a shame if its not something fixable.
I'm also the not so proud owner of a grinder with a stuffed table.. though just recently I think I've come up with a way to fix it that wont be to costly.
Good luck with yours.

Well the screw and the cylinder rod were pretty bent, probably 5mm or so. I dropped into work today (on my week off) and straighten up the screw. the screw part wasn't bent just where the bearings run. got it back to about 0.15mm. i figure there should be a bit of give in the split nut to compensate for that, if not ill make a new screw. the rod was way to bent to straighten so i grabbed a length of 4140 from work so i can make a new one. hopefully i can get it all fixed by nest weekend.

Well I've finally got the grinder back together. I ended up having to take the new rod to work to grind it to get the size and finish good enough as the only lathe i have working at the moment is way to worn to get it good enough. I cleaned out the oil tank and gave it an oil change the book says to use a mobil oil that is a iso32 slideway oil and only mobil make it, so is used a 68 slideway oil instead and i seems to work fine. Now I've got to get it in position in the shed, level it up and sort up the mag chuck and grinding wheels.

spindle problems
Got the grinder into position a couple of weeks ago and leveled it up (very tedious with a .05 per meter level). So today i decided to finish of this project before i mess with my gear hob to much. Mag chuck back on, new wheel mounted, balanced and dressed, time to take a lick off the chuck. Wound the wheel down so it just touched and off we go. went good for a bit then it seemed like it dug in and was taking 5 thou or so off . stopped wound the wheel up and had another go. worked better this time but i got steps like you get when the mill head is out when your facing and a bit of chatter. Then realized i didn't check the end float in the spindle, the book says .002-.003mm i got .06. looks like i've got more repairs to do.

Hi there,
That's going to be a nice grinder when you are finished. When I read your thread I had in my mind a bench grinder not a SG!
Are you up for new bearings?
SimonGirl, I don't wanna know about your mild-mannered alter ego or anything like that." I mean, you tell me you're, uh, super-mega-ultra-lightning babe? That's all right with me. I'm good. I'm good.

Adjusted up the bearings today. It is an interesting arrangement, according to the book i have, it has a spherical roller bearing at the wheel end that you adjust to remove the radial clearance, then a pair of thrust bearings and a normal deep groove ball bearing at the pulley end. ive got the adjustments in spec but i'm still getting a chattery finish, so ill pull the spindle out and inspect the bearings. I also have a new problem, the table is lifting when it gets close to the end of its travel. i could get a .05mm feeler under one of the vee's, so it looks like there was more damage than i thought to the feed mechanism. If it gets to hard to fix there might be a wheel balancing jig available stu.

oops forgot to mention that, thanks RC. Its a bit of an odd bearing arrangement, I would have expected a pair of angular contact bearings. I have never seen self aligning bearings in a precision application like this before, I have only ever seen them on crusher and other stuff like that.

Before you pull the spindle, I think the first question is.... Do you have surface grinding experience? An improperly dressed wheel can create all sorts of headaches..
