On second thoughts, should you have a long bar on both sides?

That was seriously funny.
I'm a little shocked and proud both at the same time that came out of Michael's mouth.

The old girl is leveled now (nearly called it the old bitch when it would not cooperate with the leveling process)
Running an indicator along the table top which may or may not be flat yields well under 0.01mm along the 3m length... For most of the way it does not move at all.. I did set up the autocollimator to get it straight in the vertical plane. The bed was slightly curved.
I also started "grouting" it in with some "tyre repair " material.

Nice to see that it's almost ready to start earning its keep. I notice a nice comfy chair in the back ground. Is that for the TA to watch and learn, or for when it's beer o'clock? Just about ready for a new title to this thread, "Slideway Grinder Goes for a Song, but to get ready to operate is another Story"

Phil how did that shipment work out for you in the end? I must say you're a brave man to do all that work and expense and ship it off to a foreign country, still, Ireland isn't far away, and I guess they have a few unemployed knee-cappers available at short notice

Still in the Poo, but a lot more optimistic as of about 48 hours ago. I've been chasing the customer for the past 3 weeks, as I figure it should be there, or they have notification for delivery / customs U.K etc. They weren't getting back to me.
Until Thursday, I got an email saying they haven't seen or heard of the machine as yet. No idea where it is, Somali Pirates?
They thought it may have even missed that boat, with the weeks delay, while they found me that empty container. Yet the paper work when the side loader picked up the box, lists that vessel. Pick up of the box was on schedule.
Box was picked up Friday mid afternoon. I'm sure when I first checked the movements of that vessel, it left late Saturday night. Should have been plenty of time to get on board. Wharfs don't typically like containers sitting around to avoid congestion.
So I'm none the wiser. The next trick will be them thinking they have 30 days when it gets there, and they are finally investing in it. Knowing my luck, it got off loaded in the Ivory Coast, where I saw that ship was, 4 - 5 weeks ago
I had a decent spindle job recently. Pictures of that on on here. I've been paid for that, so I can currently breath again.
Regards Phil.

First job done...
4 ft wing straight edge..
top and bottom are quite parallel...
The straight edge is flat under 0.01mm straight off the grinder..
Not too bad for a first time I thought.. I will need some grinding guidance I think sometime down the track, I was not happy with the way it was grinding when it was on the grinder... But then I have heard some say cast iron is a bit of a bitch to grind.. No decent pictures yet at it is 10pm and I just finished.

My truck should be there about noon tomorrow. There's only a Huron, Bridgeport and a Colchester on it. Say pick up Wednesday?
This suits me, now we have a witness, what a slow, monotonous job this is.
You had one face. Come slidey slide time, you will have 8 facets to do. That's rough grind on Wednesday, Tickle up on Thursday, Finish grind on Friday. Its only 48 settings of that head.
What was that wheel? Your pic. You have to under cut the face 3-10 deg. So its only cutting, right at the tip.
My advise is to watch the sparks still in the wheel. If it has a flat land, it will show in the wheel as it exits the work.
Big contact just add's heat. Small contact grinds best, but breaks down faster. Your next part of the learning curve grasshopper, is working out what's wheel wear verses spark out.
You do know, dressing a wheel / machine like that is free hand.
Ping me late Tuesday, and let me know how my 3 machines went. I need to order the truck. (/Joke)
Regards Phil.

Hi Phil,
I've been meaning to ask for a while. Any chance of organising with Marko a "Slideway Grinder Demonstration" as per the demo organised a couple of years ago.

Once you have had a practice on Phil's machines, the bridge on the vertical borer at work needs a grind. I'll send it up for Thursday.

I am just thinking where I am going to spend all this money I am going to make... I will be able to buy that ivory back scratcher I have always wanted..
Wheel is the CBN wheel I bought a few weeks back.. I tried a mystery wheel and an alum oxide wheel... Grinding cast iron seems to be either CBN or silicon carbide..
The CBN wheel I have has a tiny 3mm or so cutting surface, but with what you say it is still too wide and needs cutting back...
Yes it is slow and monotonous, but still faster then scraping by hand..
Since I am new to the game I am aiming for flatness of about 0.1mm/m... That should be adequate I think..
Had no power all day so no slidey play time..Light red, the colour of choice for the discerning man.

Unfortunately the bed on my CVA seems perfect so no practice there (not much use at the Lucas Heights toolroom). But the DSG does need some work so will have to see. Getting the grinder settled in is still a long way off though. Richards rapid progress makes me keen but some things just take time.
Cheers
Mark
