Slitting saw bore sizes
I bought a 100mm slitting saw blade and just assumed it had a 1" bore. Turns out it has a 22mm bore. I haven't turned down the "top hat" on my slitting saw arbor yet and I want to make it in a size that offers the most options in blades. I see 100mm blades on EBay with 1" bores, but CTC only sells 100mm blades with a 27mm bore. So there are at least 3 sizes of bore available for 100mm diameter blades (22, 25.4 and 27mm). Ignoring the fact that I now have a slitting saw blade with a 22mm bore, what is the best size to turn the arbor down to?

22 and 27mm are European sizes I think. The most common size I've seen is 1"
There is nothing to say that you can't make up a couple of arbor sizes.

I thought that might be the case Michael. I'll go with 1" for my first arbor and maybe a 22mm later.

Slitting saw bore sizes
Make a stepped arbor. Machine the cap hollow so that it will clamp on the largest diameter. It needs to be bored deep enough to clamp the largest blade without bottoming.
Mine is on a 3MT arbor and does 28mm down to 12mm in 1mm steps. The down side is the 16mm clearance needed under the blade.

Imperial sizes seem to be 7/8", 1", 1 1/4"
Metric as written is 22 and 27..Light red, the colour of choice for the discerning man.

Hi baron,
I am making this type of arbor (thanks Michael G) which reduces the clearance required. Unfortunately I think it rules out a stepped arbor design:

I also have some 12.75mm bore slitting saws, some of these are quite thin and only 40 mm diameter. (40x0.5x12.75mm). Also have some 60x1.0x16mm.
I originally bought one of those stepped arbors, a real PITA, not only clearance problems but out of round as well.
I have made an arbor for every slitting saw I have, not a lot of work in it and they are always ready to use.
Actually rather satisfying to make, and use, some of your own tooling.

I mainly use my slitting saws for the expandable mandrels I make (for closed end pen turning). The smallest of the is only 6.3mm in diameter and if I use a 1.0mm slitting saw the slot is far too wide, so I use the 0.5mm for that. I also make expandable mandrels with 4 rather than 2 slots and again the 1.0mm is too big for that.

5/8" 1" 1.1/2" ......Some screw slitting/slotting are smaller in some cases. Some also have weird sizes to lock you in to only buying their brand ....like the carbide tip people do. (And don't we all love them for that?)
