Default Smallish lathe commission? what can i expect to pay?

Hi all, i saw a lamp the other day online that i think i might just need, though the real thing is so far out of normal people's price ranges it aint funny...$24,000 to $32,000 depending on where you go...

As a result, i was wondering, would anyone be happy enough to more or less copy a design and how much do you think it'd cost? I'm not going to be holding anyone close to their word at this point, i'm just more curious as to what the general thoughts on pricing might be?

    The lamp in question http://fab.cba.mit.edu/classes/863.1...lathe-lamp.jpg

For this version i'd say at its widest point it'd measure roughly 40cm in diameter, and about 36cm from the base to the top.

I'm not overly fussed over material choice, be it in aluminium, steel, copper, brass or whatever else, (provided its within a reasonable price range)

    Hi,
I think timber would be the cheapest. Does it really need to be out of metal?

Not necessarily, but i'd just prefer it to be made from metal, or potentially plastic. I'm just not sure timber could give the same sharp edged quality?

It's not just the cost, but the weight in steel/brass/copper would be crazy, you would need a small crane to move it....

Timber or MDF would hold the sharp edges fine, then it could be painted, and even a nice brass or copper patina look put on it.

Okay, so assuming i went with something like MDF, how much do you think it'd roughly cost to get someone to turn it?

I think you might need two different people for this job. Get a wood turner to make it and prime and seal the mdf lamp. Mdf can get a bit fuzzy when the first few coats of primer go on. It would be eaiser to sand back on the lathe. Take it a movie prop shop and get them to patina and paint it. It looks like at least a week of playing around for an experienced wood turner and a few days for the painter.

How many do you want? For a one off it would take a couple of grand to get me interested.

Half a meter of 150mm diameter is around $500, so you can base your pricing off that for material. I would say the original ones where CNCed.
