    Default Source Metal Offcuts

I was after some aluminum and I went to ebay to see what the seller offcuts-galore had on offer. There weren't any listings so I made contact directly. If anyone else is after some offcuts he has moved over to http://www.oztion.com.au/user/user_d...offcuts-galore

If anyone has any other sources for small pieces of metal, I'd be interested in any details.

    Default Offcuts

    Hello John,
I have been able to buy offcuts of good grades of tool steels (EN26 etc.) from Bohler-Uddeholm here in Newcastle. They sell alloy steel, mild steel, bright steel etc. I don't know where their other branches are.
Capral aluminium sell offcuts of aluminium but they have a minium length.
I think it is one metre for their smaller sections.
    Hope this helps,
    Russell

Get a set of leather "rigger's" or "truckies" gloves, then go around to any metal suppliers in your area. Have a natter to the boys about going thru their metal scrap bin - I've found that some - not all - will be happy to let you carry off some odd bits & pieces - they actually have to pay to have someone come round & clean out the bin anyway, as long as you don't get greedy they don't have a problem. It is a PITA for them to set up & cut short lengths that you & I would use anyway.

A few brown bottles or tinnies can help lubricate the deal too.

Any idea where such dealers are around my (Hornsby) area in Sydney?

    Peter,

    Hornsby scrap metal.

King Road. Just east of Salisbury road.

Sorry can't tell you the number but it's about 100m beyond Salisbury Road and on the left. Has a red and white sign.

I'm going to Leighton Place this morning so I'll swing by and get a street number for you.

    Default Offcuts and Scrap

In Canberra, the place I go for aluminium, brass and copper offcuts and scrap is MetalMart scrap at the rear of MetalMart's steel business located at 53 Collie Street, FYSHWICK ACT. I have picked up numerous offcuts of new aluminium at a fraction of the new price. The latest was 2 x 1 metre lengths of 75mmx25mm aluminium for $5 or $6 a kilo. You have to be prepared to go once a week or so because these better bits only turn up occassionally. The other option is the metal guy in Tuggeranong town centre... can't remember the name of the business but it's in the yellow pages.

Great, thanks for that, I walk my dog around there so that will be just perfect. I also found a pattern maker today so it's surprising what's in that little industrial area.

Horsby scrap was quite good but very limited when it comes solid rounds etc. I have a few projects I'd like to make from articles in magazines where I need to buy specific material. Where, preferably on the North Shore, would I get this type of thing. 2 things I have found particularly difficult to find are precision ground round "drill rod", and grey/ductile iron rounds. I'm not after long lengths but it would also be nice to know what specific grade of material I'm machining so I can build up a knowledge base of the materials properties.

    Cheers,
    Pete

Are Steel merchants and will cut to length. They have reasonable prices but not every profile stated on their website.

I too would like a source of small lengths of scrap for turning. If any one knows somewhere in the west round Blacktown I would appreciate their input.

Sims metal it seems no longer will sell scrap only buy it. People swore that they would sell stuff, but letting fingers do the walking they said no.

I've just bought some stuff from George (offcuts_galore) and while his service is still good, you're limited in choice as to what you can get.

Any suppliers in/near the inner west of Sydney? Small quantities only, steel and aluminium.

    Default Off Cuts

    Outsider,
Try driving arround your area looking for Engineering Shops, usually you will see scrap bins on the outside of there factories. Pop in and see the owner or manager and ask if you can have a rummage through there bins for some scrap and tell them that you are using it for home use to make projects. I have done this arround my area and have found most places happy to let you have a rummage. If they are a good source of scrap supply give them a slab of beer or some wine etc, this keeps them happy and you in supply of scrap. Also a good way of coming across some bargins in used machinery.

    Regards,
    Keith.

I'm located in the inner west of Sydney. Anyone know of a metal supplier in or near the area? West to Auburn/Silverwater is OK.
Edcon is a bit of a drive from where I am.
