Cool South Bend 7" Metal Shaper.

I know these things are obsolete but i love running it esp since i learned how to 35 years ago in HS shop class. I make all kinds of little projects on it. I didn't get a stand with it so i fabbed up this little round corner table for some old time look...Bob

    Nice little shaper their Bob.
A few of us here have them and they are so handy in the home shop because of the cheap tooling.
I was just using mine the other week with a bench grinder attached, the finish was nothing to rave about, but it got the job done.

    Bob,
    Some very nice work there.
Are they HSS tips or carbide?
How did you make your tray? is that a wired/rolled edge or is it 6mm thick?
I've fold pictures of surface finish almost never look as good as it is. I really should finish mine up properly, most time I take the easy way and use the mill(easier but most likely slower)

I use both HSS and carbide tipped bits depending on what i am doing. I have drawers full of both. The stand top is a large pc of 1/8" thick steel with 1/8"x2" strap around the edge on a 45* angle. Then i welded some 1/2" round stock on top of the strap keeping it flush on the inside. Then i filled in the corners with some strips of metal and weld filling in all of the cracks and grinding it with my die grinder. I did bend some 1/2" round bar for the round edges and grafted some straight's in between them...Bob

Very nice work indeed Bob, I'd forgotten completely about that method of making a "rolled edge"

You don't have any problems with chipping the tips off the carbide(I guess not or you would stop using it). I'd been thinking about giving carbide a shot myself.

    Thanks

I think Bob is going to keep doing this to us Stuart. He just keeps bringing tooling out of the closet.
Maybe we should start calling him Dad and wait. LOL
