Is the pinion removable or is it machined directly into the end of the armature shaft? (I reckon it will be part of the shaft on a small grinder)
What condition are teeth on the pinion?
If the teeth on the wheel are stripped I'd reckon the pinion teeth are damaged as well. If thats the case I'd say it will probably be cheaper to buy a new grinder. I know Makita are in the better quality range of grinders but if you have to buy a new armature and gear wheel to repair it I'd reckon it will be costly for the parts.
Could be wrong. Check yellow pages for power tool repairers. Give them the model number and ask the question.

I only looked at the pinion briefly as I was mainly concentrating on the quite destroyed crown gear, but your probably right...its sure to be at least fairly well worn. Ill suss it out and keep you posted.

I would really like to fix this if possible, im quite fond of this grider. However if I cant at least I will have a high RPM motor that could be used somewhere in my workshop.

I was shopping for Makita spares some time ago and found this US site.
Fortunately I have a sister in the States who sourced them for me.
It may be worth trying if you are so attached to your grinder

It might be worth a call to Express Tools (& camping) of Unanderra (02)4271 1066.
Some 10 years ago my father got them to replace a bent armature and shaft assembly on his trusty AEG drill (of circa 1980).
I wouldn't be surprised if repairing is discouraged now... Repairs rate no mention on their website.

So do keep us updated, the toolie group i'm in is keen to know about repairers, and I have a Hitachi and Wolf that need new rear bearings.

I had a makita grinder and a tooth snapped off the spiral bevel gear on the armature, it's replacable but I asked a local tool shop for a price and he said it would cost $50 for the part.

I couldn't justify it at the time, so I found the same grinder second hand on ebay for a little bit more in working condition, so now if something goes wrong I have some spare parts.

Out of interest what model number is the grinder? Never know, someone here might have spare parts.

I keep all my broken tools together in a box, sometimes parts can be interchanged.

I have an older Makita 125mm grinder myself. It is the most used and reliable grinder in the shop. I would be lost without it.
I think the gear on the armature is fixed and comes with the armature assembly.

If it was 100mm Makita I could have helped, I have about 3 of them with burnt out armatures. It is just not cost effective to replace them because the price is only $20 off a new one.

On one of my old 9 inch grinders all the teeth are like razor sharp it has worn that much, one day they will go all together.

In Cardiff Newcastle there is probe power tool repairers, they have a lot of old second hand grinders etc there that they use and sell for parts, might be worth a try.

I have got Makita's, Dewalt's and Metabo's. But the ones I use the most are the $19 buggers from Bunnys. All you do to make them a great grinder is pop out the bearings grab a good set for $8 at the bearing supplies and you have one of the best little grinder around..I'm not saying that the brand names are not worth having, But I am rather hard on grinders and I drop them heaps so I know which ones I would rather break..Touch wood but I ain't killed one yet.
Just thought it may be another avenue for you if you are on a budget,

I have got another box of cheap grinders that have blown up.
Some that were bought for me from super cheap others from aldi's etc
The super cheap one lasted about 2 hours before burning itself out.
I find the switches are really cheap and nasty on some of them, and makes it a chore to turn on never mind off if there was emergency.

Saying that, I had a near brand new Bosch soft start 125mm grinder that didn't last long and I never pushed it very hard.

Thanks everyone. I will dig up the model number tonight and get back to you. Its about 4 years old.

Ended up ordering the parts from a local tool shop, it cost $30 for a new crown gear and matching pinion gear. The grinder model no. is 9005B ( makita 125mm angle grinder).

Job was dead easy to do, and I used the grinder about 3 times last night after fixing it. Boy did I miss it when it was gone, they are a very handy tool.
