Speaking of novel methods to level
If you have a tablet computer or smart phone (iPhone or Android) there's a free software item: <http://appstouse.com/measure-level-and-slope-with-great-accuracy-with-iphone/762>
I haven't found any accuracy tests, but the graduated dial looks convincing, and tenths of a degree have been mentioned!
The free version can't be calibrated - you pay about a dollar for the full version.
Of course, it'd help if your phone/tablet had a hard, straight edge on it.

Downloaded to my Android. Actually seems to work ok.
Don't think I would use it for serious work but as a quick check when nothing else is available, it looks ok.
Will leave it installed.
Probably useful in the 4wd.

Mine is pretty good, as the free version. Maybe the full version is needed to calibrate yours? I might be just how the sensor is mounted within your device.
Is it consistently 5 deg wrong?
