You can get 4140 at Interlloy we use a fair bit at work.
BETTER TO HAVE TOOLS YOU DON'T NEED THAN TO NEED TOOLS YOU DON'T HAVE

Have a bent spindle on one of the machines - and of course, the only available replacement is for a later model of slightly different dimensions - 709 was recommended to me for machinability. Bohler do hollow 4140 too, might be a trick to find the right OD to ID I suspect!

Reading this thread with much interest. Don't know much about hardening but learning a bit.
Did't know you could only case harden low carbon steel!
