    I do agree, modern axle steel would be fine, in the past I have made fabricated Hercus 4 way tool posts from cold rolled bar, machined on an hercus and an old shaper and they did great service.
    My old axle had a shoulder where the thread starts. the replacement just washes from the taper the thread root diameter and hopefuly wont break.

    good axles are made from "duraflex",dont quote me but i think its about 35 ton steel.I have a 60 ton brake press which has a 100mm v block which is duraflex.cheers danny

    Hercus made their lathe and mill spindles from Duraflex S1045. Whether Duraflex is only 1045 grade, I have no idea.
