steel source in melbourne?
sorry if this has already been asked a hundred times already but i cant seem to find it by searching, anyway what im after is somewhere to buy steel in melbourne or geelong in SMALL quantities. what i need is flat bar around 1/4" x 1" by maybe a few feet long. in something like O1 or L6 or some high carbon steel that i can heat treat to make knives, also a source for some basic stainless like 440c would be good, as well as a bit of brass or nickle silver bar. does anyone know of somewhere to get these things in these quantities, maybe someone specialises in suppliying hobbyists, all i can find is people who sell I beams to builders and things like that.
any help would be great because im only new to working with metal, being a recent convert from wood.

Try:
Dawborn Steels Trading
26 - 28 Hargreaves St Huntingdale Vic
Tel: 9543 1333
Usually sell in bulk, but I found them really helpful for my small purchases. If they could not help me, they rang around to their clients to find if anyone had an off cut to sell me.
Fantastic service.
(I don't work for them)
Otherwise find a smallish manufacturer and ask if you can go through their off cut bin - this may work with the middle sized steel retailers as well.

I don't know if they have what you are after but in Geelong try:
Collins Tradings (?) small place at the north end of Duro Street Nth Geelong .... open until 12pm Saturday ..... I bought a small quantity of steel a few weeks ago and they were happy to cut what I wanted.
Breakwater Metal land. Located in Leather st (I think) .... go along the Breakwater bridge heading from Belmont .... turn right at the lights .... and then around the corner. Again last time I was there they were happy to supply small quantities. Now proudly sponsored by Binford Tools. Be sure to check out the Binford 6100 - available now at any good tool retailer.

For all of my mild steel needs I go steelsolutions.com.au in Springvale (& Bayswater). The difference between this place and every other small cut seller I've seen is that they advertise their costs online (cutting costs also) for each product down to the millimetre. Whenever I'd previously rung small resellers for lengths of only a metre or so I'd usually get what seemed like an on-the-fly cost. No problems here. There costs also seem pretty reasonable. I don't think they stock high carbon or exotic stuff although they do have (not advertised online) bright steels whatever they are.

If your in geelong go to Metaland in Breakwater like Stinky said.
Small quantities no problem. Cut to length or whatever.
