    Default Steel tubing source

Can anyone advise a source of steel tubing preferably in Brisbane. I am talking seamless stuff here not water pipe. I need to make some spacers about 50mm long that a M10 bolt passes through. Can I buy tubing that will do the job or do I have to make them on my lathe? We are talking about quantities here, maybe 100 or so at a time.

if they have to be turned up, are there drills that coolant is injected into? If so where do I get them?

    Help and advice is appreciated.

    Rod

Are you talking cold drawn seamless, I don't know about Brisbane, here in Adelaide it would be a special order not
too many places carry it in stock, you can get drills that inject coolant as far as I know only for CNC, and they are not cheap.

This is a component for a body lift kit on a 4WD. Here are a couple of prototypes shown with a 10mm bolt. Length is 50mm long. The body goes up 50mm and an existing spacer that is captive in the vehicle body need to be extended by this amount.

I turned these up from 12L14 as a prototype. Now I have pulled a vehicle apart, I know wall thickness is not critical and the bore in the OEM part is fairly sloppy so even 1/2" pipe would probably do the job. However, being a vehicle application I don't want to use seamed pipe.

I'd prefer not to have to drill the hole and I was hoping I could find a source of drawn seamless tubing for this and other projects. Production time is important as I don't have a lot of spare time.

I do have coolant on my lathe and used it to make these as I know from experience deep holes get hot! I was wondering if I have to drill the holes if there was tooling that got the coolant to the tip of the drill.

Cheers guys thanks for offering to help. Hope this makes it clearer.

Note that I don't need design advice, just a source of the (at this stage) mythical tube if it exists in the wild. Alternatively, if it has to be drilled, are there better tooling options for coolant?

    Hi Rod,
Brisbane is the only place in Australia you can buy boiler tube nowadays. (Boiler tube is seamless)
I will try and find the link.

Fair enough. This was the bit that sounded pretty open-ended:

Have you considered ERW tube as opposed to DOM.
ERW is available 12.7 OD 1.2 WTh.

Any particular strength requirement? Maybe look at a A179 seamless heat exhanger tube this stuff is widely available in a wide range of sizes and is not particularly expensive. I have used it before for a roll cage but it would make very nice looking spacers too. Plenty of other seamless option though.

I have used Van Leeuwen Pipe and tube before and found them very helpful.

Thanks guys, I tried the boiler tube guys this morning but they were not answering their phone so I will give Van Leeuwen as they are on the right side of town for me.

Thanks guys, Heaps of options coming out of the woodwork.

Van Leeuwen said they have something that sounds OK but have a minimum order sale of $100 which is fine by me but 2 x 6 m lengths cut into 50mm pieces is an awful lot of stock. Plan B was to extend a bracket which I would get lasercut from 75x75x6mm angle iron which I am sure would cost me quite a bit more per unit.

Thanks, I had thought of this and had a look at Bohler Udderholm's product list but they don't have anything in smaller sizes like this.
