    I really shouldn't do this...

You are reading things that are not here man!
My comparison was will carbide and carbide, not carbide and hss. I also said I could go to the lengths of getting a a good finish off hss, but I don't have the time or inclinations to mess around doing it. Are you saying you cannot see a difference between the pics I put up?
You may not be making rockets etc, and like you I have never asked for a data sheet, but surely tryingng to do the best you can no matter what you are making is a good thing?

As Bryan said though, this is all moot. Unless we all have exactly the same bar of course our results will be wildly different.

Oh, and one other thing. A "click" is not a standard unit of measurement, could you maybe let us know just how big a doc you are taking?

    Default Of course you should.

Of course you should, I'm only here for the entertainment value. DOC on compound is 0.02 mm, with compound set at 45 the DOC would be half of that, but I do prefer to use technical terminology like 'click'.
Comparisons: You said: 'Unfortunately there is no easy way to put this....i wouldn't consider either of those to be good finishes'.
    Then you said: '
I'll attach a few pics of what i consider to be good finishes, one done on my new lathe and one on the mars.
Then in answer to Andre's question you said: '
Yes Andre, all 3 of those cuts are with carbide'.
As I used HSS, you're obviously comparing the cut made between HSS and carbide - apples, oranges?
But like I said about the cuts in my last post, that's the best I can do and the finish is more than good enough for me. Once again pick one to suit:

The intention was only to show a good finish period. The comparison I was making was between the first and last pic I posted. Would you like me to waste some time this arvo and get a finish like that with hss?

    Default Lunchboxes are legendary

Well I won't presume to tell you how to waste your time, you waste it as you see fit. Something tells me you'd love to show your superior expertise though, lunchboxes are always good to look in. Once again, pick one to suit:

Ok I'm struggling to make sense of this thread. You've proven you can get "not a good finish" on two pieces of bar. You're saying they look the same? Well they maybe the same steel, as Simon said some BMS and black bar comes from the same stock(though most imported steels dont these days, as I understand it). So Yes, some BMS will turn pretty much the same as some black bar. A lot wont.

    Stuart

BTW just what is being "stored outside in the weather" going to change?(execpt make BMS more like black bar, but I doubt there is much difference between indoors and out as far as that goes)

If you just want to be a pain in the butt, can you do it somewhere else?

Keep up posting like this and you'll start making me look better. I don't want that.

    Default A right good howl.

Oh good, the cavalry has come to the rescue - who would of thought..
PDW: Nope and I doubt it.
Stustoys: 'Not a good finish', should I take some pictures further away for you then? In a previous thread I said black and bright were the same and was howled down? now you're saying 'some' might be????
Ok, moving right along: I've noticed if steel is left out side for a long time it hardens. Oh, and just for fun I'll chuck in 'There is nothing wrong with Chinese Tools', that should get you all baying for blood again...
Good to see you're all getting into the spirit of things though.

"I've noticed if steel is left out side for a long time it hardens."

Interesting? I don't doubt the possibility, albeit likely miniscule, but I would like to see any data you might have.

No cavalry here, I was just trying to understand what you were on about. I'm pretty sure Ewww's more than able to take care of himself. Though I agree with PDW if it helps you.

    knock yourself out.
How about a nice close one of some 1/2"?(I assume there is something wrong with one of my bearings?hey I took that earlier when I was trying to understand what you were on about, thought I would use it)

What I said was they sometimes came from the same stock, you can make of that what you like.

Interesting, would this be the same black bar that work hardens?

Dam you Ueee I've let both of us down! I got nothin...

Just when I thought this thread was going nowhere, things start to heat up! Can someone explain to me (from a metallurgical POV) how steel can harden if left outside? I can understand that it may form a substrate of iron Oxide of maybe 10 microns (light surface rust) or so, but how does the bulk of the material transform that arguably is not even in contact with "the outside"? So, the bulk of the material knows the difference if it's kept in the shed or outside?

I own several Chinese machines. It's been like an arranged marriage, not my first choice but I have grown to love them!

So I'm not afforded the opportunity to answer criticisms, that's different. The club isn't all here yet. I am the glue that holds this cub together, without me there is no reason for the club to exist; but, you gotta do what you gotta do.
