Default How to stop metal cuttings going down your boots

    Serious stuff this.

Nothing worse than metal cuttings in your socks.

No problem with jeans, you just hang the cuffs over the elasto boots.

But with shorts in the hot weather it's a different story - but here's my solution.

I wear those puttees (sock protectors) that the lawn mower guys wear to keep the crap out of their boots. Cheap and effective. Done so for years.

Am I the only one in the group to admit this behaviour

It also pays to hang your shirt outside your strides for a similar effect. Cuttings in your jocks is even worse.

I have some of those I keep in the car for use with chainsaws and sometimes I put them on for MW.
Usually I remember I have them after I need them.

+1 for sock protectors for mowing, metalwork, woodwork and chainsaws.

Looking to cricket pads for brushcutting to keep the rocks off the shins.
I used to be an engineer, I'm not an engineer any more, but on the really good days I can remember when I was.

Not sure I see how wearing a thong would improve things. Less surface area to catch swarf?

This was never meant to a terribly serious post, but I was curious as to how many others use these cheap sock protectors - Bunnings have em.

The curious thing about them is that they seem to be an Aussie invention (in this form).

When you Google on gaiter, sock protectors, puttees you never see any one in the USA or UK selling this type of thing.

You see heavier hiking gaiters but nothing in slip ons.

    +1 for the puttees

I tried arc welding in thongs, once... but would not recommend that

Ah yes, weld beads on top of your foot, and even better, down your boot so you can't shake it off.

The old hot shoe shuffle, done that a few times.

But how do you stop em going down your neck? This was from a shaper chip that hit me and stuck - at the exact moment I needed both hands.

    Damn; that's a horrid sight.

I think you may have mentally scarred me with that. At least a 6 pack to try and dull the memory.

    Hmmm, nasty burn.

I don't know how to stop them getting down my shirt collar.

Haven't had that sort of burn, but had me jumpin around a bit.

Serious issue actually when they ricochett behind your safety goggles even - had that happen more than once.
