Suitable motor for Jones & Shipman Drill
I have the two motors pictured and am looking for advise as to which one would be suitable for my old Jones & Shipman drill that I am in the process of rebuilding. Both are Crompton Parkinson motors. The Green one is .75KW/1400 RPM and the darker Green one is 1.1KW/925 RPM.This one has no mounting foot on it and looks like it was meant to be used for a fan. I have run both and they sound OK no strange noises or smoke. What does the brain trust think about them? Thanks.

It doesn't matter which one you use as long as the pulleys combined with the RPMs provide the overall RPM range you need.
You may want to look at other factors like whether the motor shaft and pulley bore match and whether the motors physically fit the space available.
BTW the flange mount or one without the feet is easy to make foot mounted, generally all you need is a couple of pieces of angle and bolt these to the holes provided
I'm in the middle of converting an axial mounted 3/4HP motor to a foot mount for a DP, but there's a bit more work in that. I'll post what I did when I'm done.

BobL,
Thanks for the quick reply. The slower turning one 1.1KW/925 RPM is the one I thought would look more in character with this old drill and being slower and with a little more power. I will have to work out the pulleys to suit as these old drills do not need to run fast.

Hi Bob,
I don't think the .75hp motor will be powerful enough, i'd go for the 1.1 and just gear it appropriately.

Hi Bob,
surely you would use this engine if your drill is old enough

as for the motor mount..they usually just bolt on
try your local motor rewinder...they get tossed out with burntout motors...probably get it for nothing

Hi Ueee,Steamwisperer & Eskimo,
Thanks for the reply's.
Ueee I have had that 1.1 KW motor siting in a cupboard for over thirty years waiting for a project to use it on, I always thought it was 2hp, it sure is heavy. I agree with you it is the most suitable of the two.
Steamwisperer. That steam engine would probably break my shed floor, its a beauty.
Eskimo. Great idea about checking the motor re winders, there are not too many of them left these days but I know where on is about 35klm from here. I will give him a ring and send him an email with the picture.
I must get around to taking a few pictures on my drills progress, it is an enjoyable project throwing up a few challenges.
