Thread: Suitable oil for hardened rods

With my ball screws I just used motor oil as it's cheap enough to waist. I pretty well poured oiled on the lot while it was laying on a few layers of cling wrap on the bench, then wrapped them up in it. After this I put plastic bags around them and tapped the lot up end to end. I then put them in a piece of 90mm PVC pipe with end caps taped up.
I took them out about 3 months ago just to check and they are fine with no rust after being their for over 12 months or more, and I am always chasing rust on machines in my shed..

Thanks I'll go shopping tomorrow and see what I can find, I just remembered there is CBC bearings that might have something (bearing oil?) so I'll give them a try, but knowing them they'll probably want a fortune for it.

I was also thinking of hydraulic oil as its cheap and easily avaliable.

Any oil will probably provide some protection, I've been using Lanox ( sort of like Inox, with some lanolin added) Don't buy the spray cans, just get the bulk container and the squirt bottles.

For large areas, I thin it down with kerosene.
