Wanted: Surface Grinder in Brisbane
I recently restored an old Stanley #7 jointer plane. It sits flat on a flat surface with no wobble, but I'm pretty sure that the sole is out of whack. I have to advance the blade way too far to get a shaving.
So I'm looking for someone with a surface grinder who is willing to give this thing a once-over. I don't know much about surface grinders, but I know that they make metal things flat. Willing to pay a bit or trade something.
Hope to hear from someone.
Cheers,
Luke

Hi Luke,
Please excuse my ignorance. Is this plane like (or similar to) the usual type hand plane in terms of size and operation? You will no doubt find someone much closer than me but if all else fails I'd be happy to do the job if it's ecconomical to post it to Melbourne. I have also heard of people hand scraping the soles of planes too. A small surface plate (Carba ted sell them for about $65) and some blue will give you an idea of the flatness.
Cheers
SimonGirl, I don't wanna know about your mild-mannered alter ego or anything like that." I mean, you tell me you're, uh, super-mega-ultra-lightning babe? That's all right with me. I'm good. I'm good.

I can put you in touch with a small machine shop at Rocklea if all else fails.

I think a No7 is to big for a $65 plate.(if I can find mine I'll check)
And now we can start arguing about if flat is really what you're after in a plane

Well the plane is almost 100 years old. When I got it it was in pretty rough shape. I'm confident it is in need of some flattening.
I could do the sandpaper on glass/granite thing, but it will be very time consuming and, honestly, I would rather get it done professionally. The plane is longer than a piece of standard sandpaper and, by the time I source a roll of 240 grit and a piece of known-to-be-flat material it will cost the same as having it ground.
I know that the plane has some problems. I'm unable to get a proper shaving with it.
